Seiko is an out and out watch brand that today is an integral part of every watch connoisseur’s collection. In fact, whenever Seiko introduces something new, they take the watch world by storm, be it the introduction of a new collection or the inculcation of a new technology. Seiko left everyone astounded in the late 1980s when they produced the first ‘Kinetic’ watch that combined the self-energizing attributes of an automatic watch with quartz accuracy. The first watch that was entirely powered by the daily movements of the wearer.
And then came another bang. At Baselworld 2005, the ‘Kinetic Perpetual’ made its first appearance, combining the convenience and durability of Kinetic energy along with a perpetual calendar. A watch that didn’t need to be set till February 28, 2100! But it’s not just technology that’s Seiko’s strength, they lay equal emphasis on making each watch an exceptional timepiece and the Seiko Kinetic Perpetual is a testimony to that. A perpetual calendar which never needs a battery change and runs 5 times faster than a Formula One car – that’s the Kinetic Perpetual for you in nutshell.
The Watch Guide elaborates the Kinetic Perpetual for you, feature by feature, starting with:
The look and feel
At 41.5 mm, the size feels appropriate given the style of the watch. Inspired by the eternal beauty of neo-classical architecture, the Seiko Kinetic PerpetualPremier with its stainless steel case and silver dial, has the solidity and finesse of a Palladian villa. The dial with silver highlights is designed intricately taking inspiration from the architecture of a Greek temple.
The Kinetic Perpetual Premier is a perfect combination of classical features with a twist of modern flair. Bound by a stainless steel three-fold bracelet, the Premier gets its touch of boldness with the blue steel hands. This attractive dress watch is Seiko’s formal offering to the world. A speck of smoothness with oodles of style, governs the first impression of the Premier. Definitely “premier” in the true sense!
The driving force – Iconic quartz perpetual kinetic movement
Seiko brought about a revolution when they combined the beauty of a classic mechanical perpetual calendar with the advantages of Kinetic energy, the result of which is this dynamic quartz perpetual movement. The logic behind using kinetic has a resourceful purpose: the watch is powered by the movement of your body so it needs no battery replacement. This caliber 7D56 watch is the perfect example of classical watchmaking fused with modern microelectronics. With the world’s smallest ultrasonic motor which, by the way, happens to be just 0.4 mm thick, the Kinetic Perpetual caliber has set a new standard in Perpetual Calendar watches.
This sonic motor is the only source which provides energy to the 101 parts in the mechanical gear trains of the Perpetual Calendar to work correctly. The Premier displays not only date, but also months and leap years. Even though the watch is powered by the energy of your own body it provides up to 4 years autonomy when not worn. The timepiece is so reliable and accurate that even if it’s kept stationary, it still gives you the exact date, month and leap year indication. Talk about a resourceful environment-friendly watch!
The kinetic perpetual auto relay – Faster than a Formula One car
The Caliber 7D56 movement incorporates Seiko’s unique Kinetic Auto-Relay – a remarkable little rotor that spins at 100,000 rpm, or 5 times faster than a Formula One engine, that generates electricity as you move. It is because of this Auto-Relay, that the watch when not worn, operates normally for 6 months on a full charge, after which it gets into sleep mode for up to four years. The Auto-Relay is the reason why the accuracy remains and the calendar continues to show the correct date, month and year. Only the hands cease to work, which in return helps to conserve energy until the watch is put on the wrist again. And once you do, the hands automatically reset to the correct time. A fascinating feat for any watch out there!
How is the energy conserved? The rotor is suspended with magnetic levitation, so that it rotates friction-free, to conserve energy.
No battery replacement – Recharge as you move
As mentioned earlier, Seiko Kinetic Perpetual Auto Relay depends on your body movement to generate electrical energy. So when you move, you’re (literally) giving life to time. When the watch is not being worn, it hibernates and the hands stop moving to conserve energy. But, the watch’s mechanical memory remembers the time until it is put on again, and the hands reset automatically to the right time.
For this Seiko, You are the Power!

Trivia: Many watch lovers think that Kinetic Perpetual is a collection but, on the contrary, it is a technology and is not just restricted to the Premier collection. Click here to view all the Kinetic Perpetual watches.

Bom, talvez você comprou um relógio falsificado! Índia, China e Paraguai são os piores lugares para se comprar um relógio! Não acredito que funcionaria por tão pouco tempo!! Aqui, Brasília – DF – Brasil!
Dear SEIKO
I bought Premier Kinetic Perpetual watch a year ago from Bangalore airport outlet. I wore it for a month then it stopped. The watch does not resume time automatically and small circle of month also does not change, it still shows the month I bought it then. No idea whom to approach now ??
