SpotlightMonster Mode: Introducing The Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin Timepiece

Louis Erard have combined forces with Konstantin Chaykin to create a unique timepiece that pays homage to a mythological creature from Russian folklore. Not for the faint-hearted, the new Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin watch seeks to zhuzh up traditional watchmaking with this quirky rendition

May We Recommend

One has heard of ‘creating monsters’, which may not necessarily be an ideal situation with negative connotations. But what if you were faced with the choice of wearing a wristwatch that is inspired from a mythological demon from Slavic folklore? Sounds interesting for sure; whether one may choose to don it is secondary. So, it comes as no surprise that Louis Erard have collaborated with Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin to deliver a quirky watch with a unique time-telling display, featuring a one-eyed monster. Over the years, Konstantin Chaykin have mastered the art of executing watches with faces—especially characters that are looked upon as villains—whether it was the creepy Clown watch (2017), inspired from Stephen King’s novel It and loosely based on the character Pennywise; the Joker Automaton (2018); or the Harley Quinn models (2022). These unconventional timekeepers fall under the brand’s Wristmons collection, which literally means ‘wrist monsters’. The new collaboration—Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin—perfectly blends two distinct styles of watchmaking from these independents to create a watch with a strong presence on the wrist, available in two colour variations, in limited-editions of 178 pieces only. Here are some highlights from the new launch.

The Time-Eater—A Concept Open To Interpretation

Louis Erard have earned a favourable reputation among horophiles as makers of beautiful timepieces that employ métiers d’art—age-old artistic techniques of guillochage, marquetry, and enamelling, and are known for their cross-disciplinary collaborations as well. And, their USP lies in creating watches that always come at accessible price points and employ the highest standards of traditional watchmaking know-how. This new partnership between Louis Erard and Konstantin Chaykin has resulted in a watch that depicts a strange creature that seems to be devouring the elapsed time. Thanks to two circles—one that depicts the eye, and, the other represents the mouth, with a round disc with serrated edges, much like an ogre’s teeth. Here, it almost seems like one is not looking at the time, instead time is staring at us. The hour is a single, large, round eye, positioned in the upper hemisphere of the dial. The cyclopean gaze is reminiscent of Konstantin Chaykin’s first Joker watch, whose eyes were made up of white discs marked with a dot—both pupil and indicator. However, this creature has a different story and stems from old Russian fairytales that refer to Likho—a one-eyed creature that is an embodiment of evil and misfortune. However, here the concept has been kept open to interpretation and according to Konstantin Chaykin has more positive connotations, where Likho’s eye is more of a ‘protective amulet against evil spirits’, hence making sense to be represented on a wristwatch.

Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin—A Bird’s Eye View

The new watch comes in Louis Erard’s signature regulator model as the base, which has become synonymous with the brand’s design DNA. With offset hours and seconds, they create quite a dramatic statement visually, and this new collaboration drives home the point most effectively. Here the hour disc, positioned at 12 o’clock and the seconds disc at six o’clock have been used to bring the monster’s face to life in an evocative fashion. The stainless-steel case is available in two sizes—39mm for the model with a purple hour-circle, and a 42mm version with a green inner chapter ring. The dial features a silver main plate with sunray, wave pattern, where the colours used for the sub-dials—anthracite for the hour and red for the seconds—pay homage to Konstantin Chaykin’s iconic Clown timepiece. The elapsed time is measured by a central minute hand that goes across the dial, which gives it an appearance of ‘two hands turning in a circle’. To add a fun element, there’s also an interpretation of a finger, stretched out on one side, and a sign of the horns or the hand, holding on for support at the opposite end.

This meticulously-decorated movement features an open-worked oscillating weight and can be admired through an exhibition caseback. Water-resistant to 50m, both versions are presented on black leather straps, each limited to 178 pieces only. There’s also a diptych of the two models, proposed in a special box, limited to only 28 pieces

The Watch Guide
While the new Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin watch is inspired by the one-eyed monster from Russian fairytales, Konstantin Chaykin have interpreted this in a more positive manner and view it as a ‘protective amulet against evil spirits’ making it an apt design to be represented on a wristwatch
