The pioneers of the use of ceramic in watches presented a set of novelties that stayed true to its essence, while also giving us something new and fresh. The new Rado True ThinLine – extremely thin watches in high-tech ceramic – draw inspiration from greenery, earth and water, with textured dials.
Rado’s Undying Innovation With Ceramic
Particularly impressive are the new Rado HyperChrome models that are constructed in cases made of ultra-light high-tech ceramic. Lightweight watches seem to be a priority for many brands this year, as is evident in Rado’s decision to reduce the weight further in the HyperChrome, with a nylon strap in one of the versions. The HyperChrome series now also has an automatic chronograph model that combines Rado’s high-tech ceramic with bronze elements on the sides of the case that will patinate over time.

This year’s addition to the series is the Automatic Skeleton, which mirrors the detailing seen on the True Thinline models, with dial markings on the sapphire glass instead of the dial itself. This gives the watch added dimension and gives you more layers to admire.

Technically Superior Timepieces From Rado
Ceramic has also been fused with metal in the DiaMaster Ceramos watches, which combine ceramic and metal in a 90-to-10 proportion, adding sturdiness, colour and a metallic sheen to the case. Not side-lining the technical characteristics, the Ceramos watches presented this year also include the Petite Seconde certified by COSC (the Swiss official chronometer testing institute) and include small seconds sub-dials, as the name suggests.

The DiaMaster series also have watches that are mostly for visual appeal with partially-exposed movements in off-centred dials. Recreating a 1965 model of theirs, which was among the first of its kind to house automatic movements, Rado has launched a new series called the Tradition 1965 that replicates the rectangular cases of the old edition.

Longines Shows Its True Colour
Another brand from the Swatch Group, Longines, has also played up its strengths and brand identity with various new editions of existing timepieces and lines. Technical finesse is certainly a priority for Longines as well, as they unveil a new edition of their Conquest VHP (very high precision) watch that runs on a technically superior quartz movement. And to top that is a new edition of their Record watches that are certified chronometers. Even the new watch under the Longines Master collection features an annual calendar.

Longines Brings Blue To The Fore
Almost all new editions of the Longines timepieces include watches in blue, the colour of the brand, and incidentally, one of the strongest hues this year. The Longines Elegant watch exudes a beautiful shade of blue in the dial and the strap. And then there’s blue and gold in the Record range of automatic chronometers.

The La Grande Classique De Longines also comes with a dial in the same rich blue with a metallic mesh bracelet. Treated metal – another strong trend this year – has also been exemplified by Longines in the Longines Legend Diver Watch. The reimagination of the 1960 diver’s watch now comes in black PVD-treated steel.

The Biggest Highlight From Longines
While Longines has done a lot of blue this year, their most impressive piece is actually one in grey. The new HydroConquest diver’s watch is offered in a version with a sublime metallic grey dial and matching diver’s bezel. This update to the series features nuanced details that set it apart from its predecessors, such as the circle in the pointer of its seconds hand and a redesigned bracelet.
