Sporting an all-red getup during her half-time performance at the 2023 SuperBowl, singer Rihanna caused a stir for two reasons. The first was her boss-like pregnancy announcement—she performed her greatest hits effortlessly on stage while expecting her second child. The second was her wristwatch—the Jacob & Co. Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights in white gold with a red dial. Named for the polar phenomenon that takes place when solar winds meet dust particles in our atmosphere, the Jacob & Co Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights collection features bejewelled watches with kaleidoscopic dials that showcase the mechanical movement within.
Like Diamonds In The Polar Sky: Jacob & Co Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights
Created in 2017, the Jacob & Co Brilliant collection stood out for its pebble shaped watches, pavé-set with diamonds. An expression of one’s inner brilliance, the Brilliant line soon went on to display not just the sparkle of stones but also the complexities of mechanical movements behind the bling. After their full-pavé timepieces, mystery watches, and displays of tourbillons against a baguette-set dial, the brand present the Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights collection that balances both form and function of the bejewelled series. Inspired by dancing curtains of light as seen in polar regions, the Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights timepieces feature pavé-set pebble shaped cases in white or rose gold, with coloured mineral crystals as dials. These green, red or blue mineral crystal dials offer a translucency that lets the manual-winding movement inside be seen.
With straps attached directly onto its lug-less, pebble-like case, the Brilliant collection is a beautiful canvas to play with. A diamond-set case, bezel and crown create a bejewelled frame for the dial. Sized at 44mm and with a thickness of just over 12mm, rose gold cases of the Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights feature 251 round, white diamonds that measure 10.25 carat. The crown is set with 30 white diamonds (measuring 0.41 carat), and the rose gold clasp on the strap is set with 42 diamonds (0.54 carat), which brings to number of diamonds up to 323, with a total carat weight of 11.2. An 18-karat rose gold caseback features a circular sapphire crystal window that allows a glimpse into the movement.
Aurora Borealis On The Wrist: Jacob & Co Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights
Inside the timepiece is the manual-winding JCAM01 calibre, a hollowed-out movement designed specifically to be displayed on the dial. Angled bridges of the movement feature a sandblasted finishing, with an anthracite finishing on other components and rhodium-plated gears. While this finishing is offered through a coloured lens on the dial, it can be fully admired through the caseback. Integrated into the movement, the Jacob and Co logo stands out through the tinted dial at 12 o’clock. The movement offers a power reserve of 46 hours when fully wound.
Mineral crystals used for the dial are in blue, green and red hues. In conjunction with the diamond paved case, these dials reflect shifting light at various angles. This is reminiscent of the aurora borealis phenomenon that has captured the imagination of artists for centuries. As an expression of art on the wrist, the execution of the Jacob & Co Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights collection aligns well with the phenomenon it is named after.
Timekeeping hands in rose gold contrast with the base colour of the crystal but match with the case and crown, making it easy to tell the time. Their leaf shape enhances the elegance of the already dressy timepiece. And four rose gold screws stand out against the tinted mineral. With no other distractions on the dial, the movement behind it takes centrestage. The watches are paired with leather straps in hues that complement the dial, but are also easily interchangeable.
While the Jacob & Co Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights timepieces are inherently dressy because of the diamonds, they’re also among the more subdued watches from the Brilliant collection. They’re just serious enough as an expression of the wearer’s inherent brilliance with just the right amount of bling to draw the necessary attention. After all, if Rihanna wore it to the 2023 SuperBowl, it must be worth all the hype. Don’t you agree?
