Jacob & Co watches are anything but understated. Bigger, bolder, and more intricate than the rest, the pieces hailing from their Astronomia and Epic X are fine examples of high-end and high-octane horology. With the launch of Epic X in 2016, Jacob & Co offered a range that provides diverse hues to complement many moods and constantly explores new materials. The collection derives its core design philosophy from the letter ‘X’, which the watchmaker believes is the symbol of the mystical and the unknown. Talking of mysteries, India too, is a land with a culture deeply rooted in the unknown and the mystical. Jacob & Co have acknowledged this in the past when they delivered the Astronomia Art India watch, featuring four 3D hand-painted miniatures of the Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, India Gate, and Lotus Temple, or the Epic X Ram Janmabhoomi watch in saffron, showing on its dial Lord Ram, his devotee Hanuman, and the grand Ayodhya Ram Mandir. On the heels of the Janmabhoomi timepiece comes the Epic X Wonders of India Edition, featuring the India Gate, the Taj Mahal, the Qutub Minar, and now, the Ram Mandir.
Highlighting Indian Heritage: The Jacob & Co. Epic X Wonders of India Edition, Featuring Ram Mandir
The new Jacob & Co. Epic X Wonders of India Edition is a quartet of watches in titanium that feature a flattened 2D representation of the Ram Mandir on their dials. Each iteration—a limited edition of 11 pieces—replaces Mumbai’s Gateway of India from the earlier version with Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir that opened earlier this year in Uttar Pradesh. The timepieces are available in four colour options—red, blue, light blue, and green—and are a spectacle, just like the architectural marvel that is the Ram Mandir.
This Epic X Wonders of India Edition timepiece features decorative elements on the skeletal dial and caseback. Symmetrical elements like the signature vertical bridges and a minute ring bring order to the complex mechanical design of the watches. The 44mm titanium case features an outer minute ring that matches the colour of the attached rubber watch straps. Four X-shaped lugs seamlessly connect the brushed and satin-polished bezel to the strap that features hexagonal perforations in a honeycomb pattern throughout the length. This execution compliments the open-worked design language of this edition, in addition to being a comfortable fit and water-resistant up to 100m.
Finding a contrast against the peppy colours of the minute ring and straps is the skeletonised dial and the bridge showcasing the wonders. While the motifs on the Wonders of India for the red, light blue, and green watches are given a clean shade of white gold, this skeletal make-up on the dark blue watch is in an alluring rose gold hue. These Epic X Wonders of India references are a surreal addition to the Epic X Ram Janmabhoomi watch, which features a 2D miniature motif of the Ram Mandir at nine o’clock. And, on the right of its dial appears Lord Ram, either ready to take aim with a bow and arrow or just standing poised along with his most loyal devotee Hanuman.
A Monumental Movement
All four references of the Epic X Wonders of India Edition are powered by the JCAM02 calibre, visible through the transparent caseback. This manual-winding skeleton engine beats at 28,800vph and offers up to 48 hours of power reserve.
With the Ram Janmabhoomi watch and the Epic X Wonders of India Edition, Jacob & Co. have continued their tradition of honouring India’s iconic landmarks. These watches highlight the legacy of Swiss watchmaking and command attention by taking recourse in Indian monuments and mythology.
