Cartier has been the splendid face of the watch making industry as one of the oldest, most prestigious brand in the world. Ever since its inception in 1874, Cartier has been known as a caterer to the elite, with a reputation of being the ‘Jeweller of kings and King of Jewellers’, before the advent of the modern wristwatch and a ‘Pioneer in the art of modern watch making’ after 1904.
In 1917 the market was taken by storm with the introduction of a timeless classic; the Tank. Designed by Louis Francoise Cartier, the man himself, the watch drew inspiration from the Renault Tanks in the First World War. Incorporating a simple design with perfect proportions, was this model that is venerated by designers even today. The Tank has had countless number of variations added to its collection. One of which is the Tank Anglaise that is a reflection of the initial design with a modern edge.
Designed for men, The Tank Anglaise W5310008 is a reworked version of the original Tank. Rectangular in shape, the case measures 47mm x 36.2mm in diameter and is 9.82mm in thickness. The dial is flinique and silvered, with sward shaped hands in blued steel.
Polished with satin finished central links and embellished with a 9 sided crown, set with a synthetic spinal cabochon, the watch reflects ethereal elegance with a modest design. Roman numerals mark hours and a date aperture is impeccably placed at 3 o’clock. With its beautiful metallic design, the watch gives the original model a new dimension.
A watch that can be used daily, this piece is water resistant up to 30m. The watch incorporates a mechanical movement with automatic winding caliber 1904 MC and works with great precision.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
