Longines was a supplier of aviation watches in the 1950's to Switzerland's national airline, Swissair. This watch is from that era, and was designed for airline navigators who needed to determine aircraft position to draft a flight plan.
History: This is a remake of a classic aviator’s watch. The upgraded version offers a bigger aperture for the date, a bit more contrast on the layout of the dial, and the use of rustproof stainless steel on the watch hands - the original used gold.
The re-issued version was launched at the iconic watch event Baselworld 2011. It is based on the watch worn by pilot Harry Hofmann, and the original was among a 70 piece series made for the airline.
Display: While the dial is quite substantial in diameter (47.5mm), it still doesn't look massive, with a matte black dial with 24 white Arabic numerals. The numerals have a Super-Luminova coating for enhanced visibility, and the dial has a railway-track minute circle. The case back cover has an engraved “hunter” back cover engraving citing its history of Swissair navigation. A rich black alligator strap completes the look.
Features: The movement on the modern Longines Twenty-Four Hours is the caliber L704.2, automatic, which completes a full circle in 24 hours. The 24 jewels movement , ticks at 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 48-hour power reserve. The movement is revealed via the small pusher located (at the 4 o’clock position). Based on the original model, the Longines Twenty Four Hours has a center seconds hand. The 3 o’clock position neighbours the date aperture.
Sapphire crystal with non-reflecting coating protects the dial, and through the transparent caseback you can view the movement. The watch is water-resistant to 3 bar (30 meters).
There was a time when Longines timekeepers were not just artisans excelling in their field. They were explorers and adventurers, who not only designed watches but tested them during memorable flights and underwater adventures. The timepieces from the Heritage Collection celebrate their uninhibited spirits, responsible for creating history in the field of horology. Even today Longines continues to be rooted in its essence of originality by manufacturing stunningly designed timepieces. The company is recognised for introducing technologies, which have changed the face of the watchmaking industry and the Heritage collection is a tribute to such designers.
The watches from this collection are equipped mostly with round cases crafted from stainless-steel or pink gold. The dials are protected with AR sapphire crystal, making them scratch resistant and enhancing their sunlight legibility. Select models feature a transparent caseback allowing a glimpse into the intricate mechanism of the watch.
The collection is a tribute to mavericks and daredevils whose significant contributions to horology led to complex functionalities, enhanced reliability and durability. It is a matter of course that watches from this collection boast an assorted range of features in its models- so connoisseurs who want a blend of form and function can choose a watch with utilities specific to their needs. Certain timepieces have luminous hour markers for legibility in the darkness. Others feature a chronograh function to measure elapsed time. A date window in select models, gives a holistic view of time. A precise Swiss automatic movement renders the watches in the collection singularly reliable.
Charles Lindbergh was the first man to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. The flagship model of the heritage collection is the remake of The Charles Lindbergh model. To enable the timepiece to withstand the challenging conditions of the flight, the pilot himself conceived the original model. The remake of this watch is an extraordinary feat. It involves a unique design and elaborate detailing. The most interesting attribute of the watch is its “hour angle feature”. This trait allows the wearer in determining his current position. As the earth makes a complete rotation of 360 degree on its axis in 24 hours, one hour represents a change of 15 degree. So if the angle on the watch measured 30 degree, for example, it would mean that he is two hours off the GMT.

It was just perfect. I loved the unique minimalist dial and the elegant alligator leather strap. It's got a very beautiful vintage look to it. A classic in every sense of the word. It was the ideal wedding gift. This watch is definitely for keeps and has full potential of becoming an heirloom piece.
They really know how to sell luxury watches. And make it a wonderful shopping experience each time.
So much so, that I'm already eyeing another Longines watch there, which I'll probably gift myself on my birthday in a few months! Ah, temptation!
