Cartier was founded in the year 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier and has since then been deemed as the ‘Pioneer of Modern watch making’. It has also been termed as ‘King of Jewellers and Jeweller to Kings’ by Royalty. In the year 1888, the world saw Cartier emerging from manufacturing jewelled pocket watches and foraying into the world of luxury wrist watches. The Tortue collection was crafted keeping in mind the distinctive shape of the tortoise shell and was unveiled in the year 1912. A peculiar shape for a time period when round watches were considered the only choice, this iconic shape took wing and soon became hugely successful.
The Carter Tortue watch, XL, is a larger than life model that comes with a beaded crown set with a faceted sapphire cabochon on the case side. A classic silver flinque dial is equipped with Roman numerals for hour-markers and apple shaped hands crafted from blued steel that are characteristic to most Cartier watches. The straps are famously made from black semi-matte alligator-skin strap with double adjustable 18 carat white gold folding buckle with deployant clasp. A sapphire crystal dome encases the watch face.
The Cartier Tortue, XL, watch model W1556233 is a limited edition time piece containing the Cartier Calibre 9602 MC featuring a mechanical movement with manual winding. This time piece is luxuriously enthroned in an 18 carat white gold case dimensioned as 38 mm in diameter, 48 mm width and 14.5 mm thickness. The case is known to be water resistant to 30 meters/ 3 bar under water. The time piece carries a large date aperture at the 12 o’ clock position as well as the small seconds at 6 o’ clock.
The Tortue collection was officially launched in 1912. The collection with its tortoise inspired case became a gamechanger in terms of design among its typically round-shaped contemporaries.
This unique collection showcases edgy designs yet retains all the signature qualities of a Cartier. The characteristic feature of this collection is the tonneau-shaped case available in pink or white gold, which drew its inspiration from a tortoise shell. The strap meant to supplement the quiet sophistication of the case, is offered in textile or leather.
The dynamic Tortue collection stands out for the myriad functions that it avails for its user. Select models feature a perpetual calendar with an easy-to-read display. The days of the week are indicated with a charming retrograde hand. A multiple time zone indicator is also available in a few of these luxury watches with an option to change the time zone as and when necessity arises; thus making it the ideal collection for a globe trotter. Some pieces also come with a 24-hour time indicator with adjustment for summers and winters. You can choose from automatic and manual watch movements for precise timekeeping.
