The first Santos was created in 1904 by Louis Cartier himself as a gift for his friend, the renowned Brazilian aviator, Alberto Santos Dumont. Its conception was a result of Dumont’s desire for a watch he could read while flying. One of the first ever wristwatches made for men, the Santos is iconic for being the watch that lead to a slow conversion of Parisian trends in favour of wristwatches rather than pocket watches. The Santos Galbee glorifies the original structure with a slightly curved design that enhances the elegance of these watches.
The Santos de Cartier Galbee model number W20098D6 for men, features the distinctive rectangular shaped dial of the collection, made of stainless steel with dimensions 45.5 x 34.87mm. Its fixed steel bezel sports 8 exposed screws unique to the line. The crown is faceted into 7 sides and inlaid with Cartier’s trademark blue synthetic spinel. Silvered and opaline, the dial maintains continuity with the silver theme of the watch. Hourly intervals are marked by bold Roman numerals in black, with an inner track to demarcate smaller divisions of time for enhanced precision in reading. Sapphire crystal glass protects the dial effectively from scratches. The steel bracelet contains exposed screws at either end along its entire length, adding to the rugged yet traditional appeal of the ensemble.
With a mechanical movement and automatic winding, the Santos Galbee W20098D6 provides a precise timekeeping experience. The Cartier calibre 049 of the watch has 21 jewels and beats at 28,800 vph, giving the user a power reserve of 42 hours. With three sword shaped blued steel hands, the watch provides the hour, minute, and second function. A calendar aperture located between 4 and 5 o’clock displays the current date, providing advanced horologic functionality. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30m.
Who knew a simple request by renowned aviator and friend, Alberto Santos Dumont, would bring Louis Cartier to design one of the first ever men’s wrist watches. When Alberto Dumont expressed what a bother it was to glance at a pocket watch while flying, Cartier took it upon him to come up with a solution, and designed a wristwatch unlike any other of its time. From then on, Alberto Santos Dumont wore his watch every time he took flight. He was renowned throughout Europe, and thus his Cartier watch became as famous as him. People began to get more and more curious about what he was wearing on his hand, and Cartier had the answer. This gave birth to the “Santos”, which fast became extremely popular with men all over the globe. Louis Cartier then went on to collaborate with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos, which had the voyager’s name and went on sale officially in 1911, as the Santos de Cartier.
In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first ever men’s wrist watch with a square bezel, leather strap and a small buckle. At first, Cartier had only used precious metals and leather as the straps for the watches, but in 1978, he delivered a relatively lower-priced steel/gold watch, preceded by an all-steel watch. The plate bezel affixed with tiny screws became a lasting feature of the Santos de Cartier range of watches. The Cartier Santos watches are also water-resistant up to thirty metres.
The Santos de Cartier watch is crafted in steel or gold, also featuring a graceful coupling of the two metals, with or without the embellishment of precious stones. Coming in a metal or leather skin strap, the timepiece rests easy and securely on your wrist. The case has a minimalist aesthetic integrated with rectangular rounded corners, evocative of its proud history, which called for a lithe and functional device. Most watches in this range have clearly readable white dials that have bold black Roman numerals and luminescent black oxidized-steel sword-shaped hands for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. Select models such as a few from the Santos Dumont line feature a stunning hawk motif- vivid in its imagery, rich in its use of precious metals and stones yet subtle enough to conform to the foremost ethos of the collection- practicality.
