This model from Omega was launched under the Speedmaster racing range. Omega’s association with racing has been as old as half a century, when the brand launched an exclusive chronograph meant for motorsport and rally drivers.
This impressive 318.104.22.168.06.001 model from the Racing collection represents the brand’s pioneering spirit, which was guided by a sense of adventure and the desire to achieve the impossible. It features a grey dial with yellow accents and three black sub-dials. The date window is a part of the seconds sub-dial located at the 6 o’clock position. Its other two sub-dials are a 30-minute recorder and a 60 minute recorder. A domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides protects the unique dial and virtually eliminates glare. Like its predecessors, this timepiece also makes use of the bezel to mark a tachymetric scale, which can be used for measuring speed. Technical in appearance, the model exudes a masculine vibe and is far from shy, with a case diameter of 40 mm. Brushed stainless steel bracelet with polished edges can be customised according to your size for a perfect fit.
The heart of the watch makes use of the COSC-certified Omega Caliber 3330, an automatic chronograph movement with a column-wheel mechanism, Co-Axial Escapement and a silicon balance spring. Precision achieved by this movement is unparalleled and the watch stands unrivalled in the market in terms of reliability.
Paying tribute to some of the fastest men in the world, the Omega watches racing collection drew inspiration from the dashboards of Italian cars of the 1950s. It is noteworthy that even before the Speedmaster range gained popularity for being the first watch to be worn on the moon by Neil Armstrong, the timepieces from this range were already famous as they had found themselves on the wrists of exceptional young men and women who drove high-performance automobiles.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
