Chopard was founded in the year 1860 by Louis Ulysse Chopard. Louis was a Swiss watchmaker who worked hard and initiated the business by establishing L.U.C. manufacturing firm in Sonvillier, Switzerland at the age of 24. He relocated the firm to Geneva in 1937 and launched his remarkable collection of watches.
The Chopard 278475-3001 comes with a 36 mm, stainless steel case and fixed bezel made of the same material. It has a plain white dial with the brand’s name embossed in black. The subtle silver tone hour and minute hands shine bright on the pure white dial. It has silver Roman numeral hour markers at the 3 o’ clock, 6 o’ clock, 9 o’ clock and 12 o’ clock position. The dial includes 7 floating diamonds that enhance its appeal. This stylish time piece is presented on a strong navy blue, alligator leather strap with a tang clasp. It has a pull/ push crown studded with a blue sapphire cabochon.
The watch has an analogue quartz movement which is considered to be more reliable compared to the automatic movement. It comes with the much in demand date feature. Its date window is positioned between 4 o’ clock and 5 o’ clock. The beautiful dial of this watch is fitted with the robust sapphire crystal glass which is known for its scratch-resistant properties. It is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters.
Chopard has been associated with the prestigious Cannes Film Festival since more than a decade. Their partnership began back in 1998 when Caroline Scheufele teamed up with the skilled craftsmen at Chopard to redesign the Cannes’s Golden Palm award. Chopard’s redesigned Palme d’or was unveiled on 24th May 1998. The brand has been the official partner of the esteemed festival since then and every year it crafts new models to honour the movies.
1993 saw a massive revolution in the field of luxury watches for women when Chopard became the first brand in the world to combine the different worlds of steel and diamonds, in a manner that left watch aficionados spellbound. The brainchild of Caroline Scheufele, Artistic Directior and Co-President of Chopard, and her brother, Karl Friedrich, the Happy Sport collection soon became the favourite of all connoisseurs. The idea that ‘diamonds are happiest when they are free’ was suggested by Karin Scheufele, their mother with the release of the Happy Diamonds collection in the 1970s, and is further exemplified by the Happy Sport- a masterful blend of the contemporary and traditional.
The most distinguishing feature of the Happy Sport is its revolutionary incorporation of ‘floating diamonds’. Each watch from this line boasts free moving diamonds just above the dial, most commonly gold plated. The technology in this novel design involves two parallel layers of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, with the cavity in between being an ideal size to allow free movement of the diamonds, while preventing toppling over. The exact technology, however, is maintained as a closely guarded secret by the brand, adding to the watch’s intrigue. The resultant effect is that of a playful, chic watch that retains the impeccable assembly characteristic of Chopard. Variations of the diamonds include exquisitely crafted fish, four leaved clovers, and other such tranquil adornments.
Though initially launched in a circular shape, Chopard has gone on to make square and oval shaped cases in small and large sizes, made in stainless steel, 18K rose, yellow or white gold or a mix of rose gold and stainless steel. The crown is set with a sapphire cabochon. The dial, available in a range of hues, is silver guilloched in the centre, with some models being completely embedded with diamonds. It contains rhodiumed or gold toned hands and index markers, with a date window in most versions. The movement of the watch is either Quartz or mechanical self-winding, for precise timekeeping.
