One of the oldest jewellers in the world, catering to the needs of the crowned heads in the 19th century, Cartier even today has a reputation of selling only the finest pieces. With a huge range of timepieces, the brand has literally a piece for everyone. Created with the utmost precision and incorporating the most aesthetically beautiful designs, Cartier stands renowned in the watch industry as the oldest, most resplendent face in the art of watch making.
Designed by Louis Cartier, the man himself, the initial Tank model drew inspiration from the Renault Tanks used in the First World War. The timepieces of the collection embody the perfect lines and seamlessly ideal symmetry of the great machines.
With the Tank MC W5330002, the ‘miason’s iconic design takes on a resolutely masculine edge.’ The timepiece incorporates elements that preserve the initial design of the Anglaise, yet consist of a larger case and more distinct square shape. Its case shape is 18K pink gold with a feceted crown decorated with a sapphire. Roman numerals mark hours and a small seconds counter is meticulously placed at 6 o’ clock. The watch also features sward shaped hands in gilded steel. A calendar aperture is placed at 3 o’ clock.
A semi matt dark brown alligator skin agrees with the golden exterior making the piece a pure work of art.
In addition to the brilliant design is its self-winding mechanical movement that functions with the caliber 1904 PS MC. The watch is water resistant up to 3 bars, that is 30m. Protecting the case window is a sapphire that is also scratch resistant. The piece exemplifies the technical precision and quality craftsmanship of the brand. A masterpiece, the watch is ‘a masculine expression of elegance.'
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
