Acclaimed as a brand that have broken the norms of time-telling—even as they continue to do so—French watchmakers Trilobe present tremendous works of horology that may change the way wearers may see any other timepiece. Here’s a brief introduction to the brand and the various interpretations of their three-lobe displays

Trilobe have achieved more in just five years of their existence than brands strive to achieve for decades. With multiple GPHG nominations, their ground-breaking timepieces are not just appreciated but loved across the world of horology. Trilobe’s brand of timekeeping is on the concept of unfreezing the time from under the hands, and rotating the complete dial. This is a perfect example of what happens when someone outside the industry brings in a fresh perspective and challenges conventions. Gautier Massonneau, the founder and CEO of the brand doesn’t come from a watchmaking family, but has a background in finance.
Les Matinaux By Trilobe
The very first collection launched by Trilobe, Les Matinaux—which translates to ‘morning people’ in French—was inspired by the work of René Char, arguably the greatest French poet. The collection takes the name after his book Les Matinaux (or The Dawn Breakers). A clear testament to the maison’s vision and achievement is that their very first watch was preselected for the 2019 GPHG Awards under the ‘Petite Aiguille’ category. The collection was originally introduced with an ETA movement in 2018, which was later updated to the maison’s exclusive X-Centric calibre in 2020. The most noticeable visual element of the watch, which also distinguishes it from the other collections of Trilobe is the flower-shaped skeletonised window on the seconds disc which also offers a peek into the calibre. Today, Trilobe offers the Les Matinaux collection in multiple colour variations, available in a choice of two case sizes and materials.
Nuit Fantastique By Trilobe
One of the widely desired collections from the stable of Trilobe, the Nuit Fantasitque—which translates to ‘fantastic night’ in French—was also preselected for the 2021 GPHGs under the ‘Petite Aiguille’ category, and a later version of it also won the GPHG prize in 2022 under the same category. This collection also offers two case sizes and material variations in multiple dial colours.
The minimalistic yet masterful execution of various finishes on the dials give the Nuit Fantastique a distinctive appeal. One of the elements that distinguishes it from Les Matinaux is that the seconds disc is no more confined within the diameter of the minutes disc, instead there is an added layer for the minutes disc which adds depth to the watch face.
Une Folle Journée By Trilobe
Yet another GPHG Nomination, the Une Folle Journée collection—meaning ‘a crazy day’ in French—is the youngest and possibly the most intriguing of the lot. Released last year in March, it is loosely based on the eccentric circular design of Les Matinaux. With the floating & rotating rings, this collection takes skeletonisation to new heights. Placed under the massive, domed crystal, all three rings are placed at different heights, which adds a stunning dimension to the watch face and gives it a distinctive character. Unlike the other two collections, this is only available in a 40.5mm case size, in titanium or gold.
Trilobe And The Secret Of The Night
Trilobe’s span of innovation doesn’t stop at creating a completely new way for displaying time, there’s more to the story. Each watch has its own story which is very personal to the buyer, and to make it even more personal, Trilobe introduced the Secret editions. Available in the Nuit Fantastique and Les Matinaux collections, the maison helps you immortalise a precious moment in a poetic way. You can select a date, time and location that means something to you and they replicate the exact night sky from that moment in time on your watch face. It could be a birthday, an anniversary or any other occasion that you hold dear. Not only does this add more to the emotional value of the timepiece but also makes for a great conversation starter.
