About the Eterna KonTiki Collection
Eterna's KonTiki collection was first introduced in the early 1950s and draws inspiration from the famous expedition led by Thor Heyerdahl. In 1947, Heyerdahl and his crew sailed a raft named "Kon-Tiki" across the Pacific Ocean to demonstrate that ancient South Americans could have settled in Polynesia. Eterna embraced this spirit of adventure and exploration by creating a robust diving watch that would withstand the rigours of aquatic environments. Over the years, the KonTiki collection has evolved to include modern features while maintaining the original aesthetic and robust characteristics that have made it a beloved series among diving watch enthusiasts.
Design And Aesthetics
The KonTiki watches are known for their distinct, sporty design and durable construction. The collection typically features a stainless steel case, ranging from 40mm to 45mm in size, providing a substantial presence on the wrist. The most iconic models feature a unidirectional rotating bezel for timing dives, ensuring functionality and safety. The dials are designed for optimal readability, often featuring luminous hour markers and hands. Eterna has also incorporated several colour options in the KonTiki collection, with classic black dials being complemented by vibrant blue or green accents, reflecting the maritime theme. Some models come with a screw-down crown and caseback, enhancing water resistance, which typically ranges from 200 to 300 metres, depending on the model. The watches are commonly paired with rubber straps or metal bracelets, combining comfort and durability for active use.
Notable Iterations
The KonTiki collection has seen various iterations over the decades, catering to both traditional and contemporary tastes. Notable models include the Super KonTiki Automatic, featuring Eterna's reliable automatic movement and offering the classic diver’s functionality. The KonTiki Chronograph adds a sporty touch with its chronograph complication, allowing for precise timing during aquatic adventures. These watches often incorporate the historical features that made the original KonTiki a favourite among divers. In addition, Eterna has released limited editions, such as the KonTiki Diver, which comes equipped with enhanced specifications and unique design elements that appeal to collectors.
ABOUT THE MOVEMENT
Sellita, once a reassembly company, is now the second-largest movement maker in Europe. They are known for producing the renowned calibre SW200-1, an automatic movement that serves as a popular alternative to the calibre ETA 2824-2. It is widely used by many watchmakers as the main and base calibre. The SW 200-1 powers essential watch functions such as the three central hands display and date, boasting a 38-hour power reserve and operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. However, these specifications can be adjusted by brands to meet their specific requirements.
