Ressence - Beyond Hands
Ressence is a Swiss watchmaking brand that has gained significant attention in the world of haute horlogerie for its unique approach to timekeeping, thanks to its innovative designs. The brand was founded by Benoît Mintiens in 2010 in Belgium with an aim to represent an independent way of crafting fine mechanical timepieces, imbued with a 21st-century design aesthetic. Their watches are known for their distinctive appearance and technical sophistication, combining traditional Swiss watchmaking techniques with contemporary design elements.
One of the most distinguishing features of Ressence watches is their patented Orbital Convex System (ROCS). Instead of using traditional hands, the ROCS employs rotating discs with graphical indications, giving the appearance that the dial itself is in motion. This innovative design not only enhances legibility but also creates a mesmerising visual effect.
Ressence watches are known for their minimalist and sleek aesthetic, characterised by smooth, rounded edges, and a lack of traditional crowns and hands. This design philosophy emphasises simplicity and clarity, resulting in a clutter-free and modern appeal that sets Ressence watches apart from other conventional timepieces.
Some timepieces produced by Ressence use a unique oil-filled capsule system to eliminate the visual distortion caused by the reflection and refraction of light between the different layers of the watch. By filling the space between the dial and the sapphire crystal with oil, the brand achieves a seamless and almost organic aesthetic, with no visible lines or reflections.
Timepieces
Ressence has some of the most striking timepieces with unmatched craftsmanship in its arsenal, which are divided into six collections named: Type 1°, Type 1², Type 2, Type 3, Type 5, and Type 8. This almost militaristic nomenclature depicts the conceptual nature of the brand. The Type 1° is built on the Series Zero and features a more sleek and innovative design.
Whereas, the Type 1² collection features a square case, designed over the Series Zero, one of the first timepieces by the watchmaker which was launched in 2010.
Delivering on the promise of innovation, the Type 2 collection can be considered the best of both worlds. The Type 2 features eCrown, a feature that stops the movement when it detects that the watch is not worn.
The Type 3 features the much revered oil-filled capsule, which delivers a more symbiotic experience of watchmaking. Whereas, Type 5 is a diving watch featuring the brand's renowned ROCS module to display time. The latest addition is the Type 8, a minimalistic watch, which delivers on both the aesthetics and mechanical aspects of watchmaking.
