Reservoir Watches: Swiss Watchmaking Inspired By Vintage Instruments

Reservoir occupy a distinctive position within contemporary Swiss watchmaking, bringing the visual language of vintage measuring instruments to mechanical watches. Founded by François Moreau, the French watchmaker began developing the brand in 2015, driven by a lifelong fascination with vintage gauges, dashboards and precision instruments. Reservoir were formally established in 2017, introducing an approach to watch design centred on automotive, aeronautical, marine and industrial instrumentation.

The idea behind Reservoir watches is immediately recognisable through their dials replacing the conventional three-hand arrangement with a retrograde minute hand sweeping across a 340 degree scale, a jumping-hour display and a power-reserve indicator. The system draws directly from speedometers, RPM counters, fuel gauges, manometers and depth gauges, translating familiar instruments into a mechanical watch format. Every hour, the retrograde hand returns to its starting point as the jumping hour advances, giving the passage of time a distinctly mechanical rhythm.

How Reservoir Turn Vintage Measuring Instruments Into Mechanical Watches

The brand's design philosophy is closely tied to their emblem, which takes inspiration from the ridged profile of the petrol jerrycans used during the 20th century. For Reservoir, the reference represents stored energy and the preparation required before an adventure begins. This idea continues through their collections, where functional instruments become the starting point for watches designed around specific worlds and activities. Although their visual identity is distinctly French, Reservoir watches are Swiss Made. The proprietary complication module is developed with master watchmakers in La Chaux-de-Fonds and combines the retrograde minute, jumping hour and power-reserve functions with an automatic base movement. Their current technical architecture includes the RSV-240 calibre, which incorporates a patented module and is assembled in Switzerland.

Reservoir Watch Collections Inspired By Automotive, Aviation And Marine Instruments

Reservoir organise their collections around the world that have shaped their design language, with each family translating a different type of measuring instrument into a mechanical timepiece. The automotive range forms one of the brand’s strongest signatures, with GT Tour, Kanister, Supercharged, Longbridge, Battlefield, 390 Fastback and Monza Design drawing from racing dashboards, speedometers and vintage automotive counters. The GT Tour, in particular, captures the character of classic racing instrumentation through its tachometer-inspired display, while Kanister takes cues from the dashboards of mid-century sports cars. The same approach extends into aviation and marine watchmaking. Airfight and Black Sparrow reinterpret cockpit instruments and military aviation gauges with Airfight Jet translating the visual logic of aircraft dashboards into a wristwatch.

At sea, Tiefenmesser takes inspiration from submarine depth gauges, while Hydrosphere develops the concept into a professional diving watch, combining Reservoir ’s signature retrograde display with a rotating bezel and helium escape valve. The brand’s instrument-led philosophy also reaches beyond transport. Sonomaster draws from the analogue displays found on Hi-Fi equipment, bringing the language of audio metres into its distinctive time display. Reservoir have extended this idea further through Comics by Reservoir, where collaborations with characters such as Popeye and Blake et Mortimer introduce a more playful interpretation of the brand’s mechanical architecture. The Popeye collection includes market-specific editions, including a limited edition created for India, giving the brand’s signature display a distinctly cultural dimension.

Why Collectors Choose Reservoir Watches

Reservoir's appeal lies in the clarity of their identity. Their watches have created a recognisable horological language where retrograde minutes and jumping hours serve as functional complications and visual signatures. The brand have received four nominations at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève and won a Red Dot Design Award in 2022, reinforcing the design significance of its approach. For collectors looking beyond conventional Swiss watch design, Reservoir offer an alternative built around mechanical ingenuity, French design and Swiss manufacturing. Their watches turn familiar instruments from racing, aviation, diving and sound into a distinctive way of experiencing time.
