Cartier is recognized all over the world as the culmination of artistic finery and technological prowess, with its iconic collections of jewellery and watches. Formed by Louis-Francois Cartier in 1847, the brand enjoyed successive periods of royal patronage from French, English, and Russian society, owing to its superior skills in catering to the needs of the pickiest individuals.
The celebrated Brazilian aviator, Alberto Santos Dumont, was a near and dear friend of Louis Cartier. Thus, when Dumont stated his desire for a timepiece that could be used while flying, the mastermind in Cartier led to the birth of the Santos, the first modern wristwatch for males. Created in 1904, the Santos has since undergone multiple modifications that heighten the essence of the collection- traditionalism with new age innovation.
The Santos de Cartier Galbee model number W20099C4 is extra-large for the male watch enthusiast. Characterised by the collection’s exposed screws, the watch has a theme of steel and gold. The distinctive rectangular steel case has dimensions 45.54 x 34.87mm, with a thickness of 8.67mm, making it ultra-thin for a sleek modern appearance. The fixed bezel is made of 18K yellow gold and imbedded with 8 steel screws, and the steel bracelet with a hidden folding clasp boasts 18K yellow gold screws. Time intervals are marked with the traditional Roman numerals on a silvered opaline dial, with an interior rail-track giving minute denominations, the path of which is traced out by blued steel sword shaped hands.
Cartier’s calibre 049 powers the mechanical automatic movement of the Santos de Cartier Galbee W20099C4, thus providing immaculate timekeeping functions. The 7-sided steel crown is inlaid with a synthetic blue faceted spinel. A calendar aperture between 4 o’ clock and 5 o’clock provides enhanced horologic functionality. Sapphire crystal glass renders the dial scratch resistant. This timepiece is also waterproof to a depth of 30 metres.
Who knew a simple request by renowned aviator and friend, Alberto Santos Dumont, would bring Louis Cartier to design one of the first ever men’s wrist watches. When Alberto Dumont expressed what a bother it was to glance at a pocket watch while flying, Cartier took it upon him to come up with a solution, and designed a wristwatch unlike any other of its time. From then on, Alberto Santos Dumont wore his watch every time he took flight. He was renowned throughout Europe, and thus his Cartier watch became as famous as him. People began to get more and more curious about what he was wearing on his hand, and Cartier had the answer. This gave birth to the “Santos”, which fast became extremely popular with men all over the globe. Louis Cartier then went on to collaborate with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos, which had the voyager’s name and went on sale officially in 1911, as the Santos de Cartier.
In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first ever men’s wrist watch with a square bezel, leather strap and a small buckle. At first, Cartier had only used precious metals and leather as the straps for the watches, but in 1978, he delivered a relatively lower-priced steel/gold watch, preceded by an all-steel watch. The plate bezel affixed with tiny screws became a lasting feature of the Santos de Cartier range of watches. The Cartier Santos watches are also water-resistant up to thirty metres.
The Santos de Cartier watch is crafted in steel or gold, also featuring a graceful coupling of the two metals, with or without the embellishment of precious stones. Coming in a metal or leather skin strap, the timepiece rests easy and securely on your wrist. The case has a minimalist aesthetic integrated with rectangular rounded corners, evocative of its proud history, which called for a lithe and functional device. Most watches in this range have clearly readable white dials that have bold black Roman numerals and luminescent black oxidized-steel sword-shaped hands for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. Select models such as a few from the Santos Dumont line feature a stunning hawk motif- vivid in its imagery, rich in its use of precious metals and stones yet subtle enough to conform to the foremost ethos of the collection- practicality.
