ReviewDefying Tradition With The Zenith Defy Inventor
Trying to reinvent the wheel is no mean task, but Zenith has upped its own disruptive watchmaking game with the new Defy Inventor

When Zenith unveiled the 10-piece limited edition Defy Lab in 2017, it was the most accurate mechanical watch in the world. Now that may be a tall claim, but before any assumptions are made, it’s important to understand the science behind the Defy Lab.
Zenith worked in tandem with its parent company LVMH Group’s research and development department to introduce a new compliant silicon technology for the Zenith Oscillator, which, simply put, is a single regulating component that incorporates the functions of the balance wheel, balance spring, and lever. Almost 18 months following the ultra-limited concept watch’s monumental arrival, the Zenith Defy Inventor was introduced at Baselworld 2019, marking the successful implementation of Zenith’s futuristic technology, and quite possibly endangering tradition itself.
Operating at a breakneck speed of 18Hz (1,29,600vph), the in-house calibre ZO 9100 is quite the technological marvel. The single silicon component eliminates the inclusion of 30 individual parts, which in turn reduces energy-robbing friction, leading to significantly better timekeeping and increased reliability. It’s no surprise then that the movement takes centre stage, and rightly so. But it’s not the only avant-garde technological innovation that’s at play here. The 44mm case, for example, is crafted in brushed titanium, while the bezel is constructed in the LVMH-patented Aeronith—the lightest aluminium composite in the world. Oozing charisma and a futuristic vibe, the Defy Inventor is not only technologically advanced but also looks exquisite.
The space-grade innovations and superlative performance of this watch are capable of disrupting traditional methods of watchmaking. The Zenith Defy Inventor breaks age-old barriers and modus operandi, assuring us that change is the only constant in life.
