The horological industry’s biggest trade show, Watches and Wonders, is back. And after two years of pandemic-induced setbacks, there’s finally a physical event taking place in Geneva. With 38 participating brands, the first three days of the fair has seen a slew of brand-new releases, from stunning GMT models to bright-coloured timepieces. Among these impressive novelties, the most popular watchmaking complication, the chronograph, continues to reign supreme. Watchmakers such as Grand Seiko, IWC, Parmigiani, TAG Heuer and Zenith have not only unveiled their own unique interpretations of the complication, but have also tried to push the boundaries of accuracy and performance. Here’s a look at some of the most stunning chronograph models that were introduced during the event.

Zenith Chronomaster Sport

The new Zenith Chronomaster Sport is a seamless combination of extravagance and sporty looks. Launched last year in steel, these 2022 editions are fully in rose gold. From case to bracelet, each attribute, except the dial, has been crafted from the precious metal, synonymous with opulence and grandeur. Meanwhile, the display comes in two options, including matt white or black lacquer. Zenith have featured their iconic tricoloured sub-dials along with rose gold hands and hour indices that add to the lavishness of the watch. Inside, we have the new high-frequency El Primero 3600 calibre, which has the ability to store a 60-hour power reserve and ensures better performance and accuracy than ever before. Beating at 36,000vph, the movement can also measure 1/10 of a second, via the central chronograph hand, and is visible through the sapphire crystal display back.

TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Limited Edition

After officially announcing their partnership last year, TAG Heuer and Porsche have once again come together to unveil a limited-edition timepiece that pays homage to the illustrious legacy of both companies. Based on TAG Heuer’s well-known Carrera sport chronograph, the new watch has a colour scheme inspired by Porsche’s ‘racing yellow’, which can be seen in the carmaker’s logo on the bezel, as well as on the lacquer of the crown and in the graphic details present in small touches across the dial and seconds hand. Standing in contrast against the yellow hue are the DLC-coated case and black dial of the watch that elevate its sporty looks. The display features a traditional chronograph layout and sports a texture inspired by the metallic bodywork of cars with a slightly glittery effect. The timepiece is powered by the self-winding Heuer 02 movement, which offers a minimum power reserve of 80 hours. To top it all, the brand have paired it with an elegant black leather strap that comes with yellow stitching.

Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Chronograph 15th Anniversary Limited Edition

This limited edition of the Grand Seiko Chronograph GMT marks the 15th anniversary of the original timepiece, which was first introduced back in 2007 and sent shockwaves across the horological industry. The new model has been conceived in line with the Japanese watchmaker’s latest design code, called Evolution 9, and comes set in a case more ergonomically crafted than its predecessors’ were. The timepiece also features a bidirectional-rotating external 24-hour bezel, unlike the original watch that had the 24-hour scale on an internal flange and used no external bezel. With the wearer able to adjust the bezel in either direction, in concurrence with the GMT hand on the dial, this new iteration can indicate the time in three separate zones at once. Under the hood, the calibre 9R96 provides accuracy with a maximum deviation of ±10 seconds per month and can store a power reserve of up to 72 hours.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun

What stands out about the all-new versions of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition is their colour. Available in ‘Lake Tahoe’ (white) and ‘Woodland’ (green), the timepieces have been crafted by following a complex manufacturing process to create uniform monochromatic parts, including straps, to perfectly match the ceramic cases. The designers at IWC collaborated with Pantone—a leading authority on colours—and did several pigment tests by mixing zirconium oxide (the most widely used ceramic base) with metallic oxides to achieve the ideal shade. Not only this, they had to adapt to specific conditions, such as the temperature and the heating duration, for each hue. These new models are a delight to wear and provide optimal readability with a well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing display that features three sub-dials at six, nine and 12 o’clock.

Parmigiani Tonda GT Chronograph

Recognised for its sharp round case, clean display and sporty vibes, the Tonda GT Chronograph has been a mainstay at Parmigiani Fleurier for years now and it continues to enjoy an ardent following of admirers. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the watchmakers have expanded on the line this year, by introduced two brand-new versions. The latest Tonda GT Chronograph is available in an exquisite case crafted from either 18-karat rose gold that features a large date display at 12 o’clock, or stainless steel, which consists of an annual calendar function. Both the models are offered with an alluring display that comes in a combination of silver and ‘quantum grey’ or silver and ‘granata’ (deep red). Paying meticulous attention to every detail of the iterations, the brand have paired the watches with super-comfortable rubber straps that match the colour of the sub-dials. For rose gold iterations, Parmigiani have used the COSC-certified automatic PF071 movement, while the steel models run on the self-winding PF043 calibre. Each version comes with a sapphire crystal caseback that provides a glimpse of its nicely decorated movement.
