Making The Right Moves With The Seastar 2000

Anyone who knows a thing or two about Tissot knows that the revival of the PRX watches in 2020 was an absolute game-changer. They looked to their archives for inspiration and brought back the timeless design, which in turn led to unprecedented success. Along somewhat similar lines is the story of the Seastar watches.

Way back when the Seastar from Tissot actually used to be a dress watch. It was only in 2003 that the Seastar 660 debuted with a water resistance of 200m and a rotatable bezel. In 2018, the Seastar 1000 appeared and set the base for the Seastar 2000 models we see here.

The first impression is somewhat similar for most folks: a chunky, muscular timepiece with a respectable modern appeal. By no means is that deduction wrong—especially because the timepiece measures 46mm in width and 16.26mm in thickness—but it might be underselling the watch a bit.

As was the case with the PRX, the name of this timepiece remains significant. The Seastar 2000 features 2000ft of water resistance, or, in other words, 600m. Constructed from 316L corrosion-resistant steel, along with the ceramic bezel insert, and an integrated helium valve at nine, this timepiece as robust as it gets.

What makes this timepiece more than just a professional diving tool is its appearance. Despite the large thickness and width, the aesthetics remain quite modern. The wave pattern that adorns the dial of this watch wasn’t an afterthought; it has been masterfully created to have its hues vary depending on the angles of light falling on it.

The series offers three dial colours: anthracite, blue, and turquoise. The date window at six isn’t a completely necessary choice for a dive watch, but that’s what makes it even more practical for any modern-day urban individual.

What Powers The Seastar 2000

What powers this watch—apart from your dashing self that’s going to move the rotor as you pull it off with anything you wear—is the renowned automatic Powermatic 80 calibre from Tissot. As the name suggests, the movement offers a power reserve of 80 hours, which is quite impressive.

Though it may be considered an unconventional move for a dive watch, in our eyes, the decision to have a display caseback protected by sapphire crystal is a game changer. The rotor is completely engraved, and the movement makes for quite a spectacle—not that you’d expect anything less from Tissot.

The screwed-down caseback, along with the screw-down lock, give the timepiece the water resistance it has. The large hands of this timepiece are judiciously inserted with Super-LumiNova, which is to be expected in a divers watch.

The timepiece comes with a bracelet, but the easy-interchangeable mechanism allows the wearer to switch it for a strap that comes with a pin buckle.

All in all, the fact that Tissot offer such extraordinary quality at the prices that they do it at is what sets them apart. We’ve now come to expect such immaculate designs at alluring price points from the brand, which continues to work in their favour.
