A title that goes back almost 40 years, People magazine’s announcement of whom they pick as the Sexiest man alive every year is one that the world keeps an out for. Lately, the announcement has been made around November—typically, just before the festivities of the season in the west. This year the title of Sexiest man alive has been bestowed upon actor and racecar driver Patrick Dempsey.
The Sexiest Man Alive
The actor became a household name, worldwide, as Dr Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd in the hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy—a role that he played as a series regular for 11 seasons, from 2005 to 2015. He was signed on as an ambassador by Swiss watchmakers TAG Heuer soon after that regular stint, around the same time he began to dedicate more time to his primary passion—motorsports. It was a match made in heaven, for Dempsey and TAG Heuer, as the brand’s primary association is that with the world of motor sports.
Three of their product pillars are dedicated to motor-racing. The Formula 1 line is their entry-level collection. Monaco is high on heritage value and reflects TAG Heuer’s connections with motorsports as well as Hollywood. And the third is the Carrera collection, which holds heritage value, but is also a platform for material and mechanical innovation by TAG Heuer. And it’s a TAG Heuer Carrera that we see on People magazine’s latest Sexiest man alive in their cover story photo shoot, in more than one photo—also featured quite prominently on the cover of the Sexiest man alive 2023 issue.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper On The Sexiest Man Alive
The watch worn by Dempsey in this photospread is the 2023 TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper, which came soon after the launch of the Carrera collection’s 60th anniversary special editions, unveiled at Watches and Wonders Geneva, in March-April 2023. A resurrection of the iconic 1963 Skipper sailing watch, this new edition is sized at 39mm and features the new glass box sapphire crystal on the case, which enhances the visual depth of the display. On the display, one sees sailing colours—which draw from the 1963 model—and a 15-minute regatta timer.

These elements of the watch are quite distinctly visible on most of the visuals where one can see it on Dempsey’s wrist in the Sexiest man alive photospread. Upon being announced as Sexiest man alive, Dempsey told People magazine, “I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life. It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.” As it turns out, Dempsey is not the first brand ambassador of TAG Heuer’s to hold the title of Sexiest man alive by People. Other (now former) ambassadors of TAG Heuer who have been named Sexiest man alive have included actors Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth.
