A lot happened in the first three months of 1931, leading to quite a few butterfly effects in world history, and even in India specifically. In the field of watchmaking in particularly, it was Jaeger-LeCoultre for whom it was quite the game changer—almost literally. You’ll find myriad pieces on The Watch Guide that unfold the rich, fascinating history of the Reverso. However, to refresh your memory, let’s take another look back.

The eye-catching tone of the dial beautifully complements the steel hues of the hands and indexes, making this watch a worthy addition to any collection

British officers stationed in India, who played the vigorous sport of polo were unhappy that the glass on their watches broke frequently. They demanded a rugged yet elegant timepiece that would bode well with their activities. This certainly impacted the course of watchmaking history, for Jaeger-LeCoultre launched the Reverso. The solution was ingenious. Here was a watch capable of sliding into its base and turning completely on its axis, flipping it over to bring its solid steel caseback to the front.

The unique mechanism, patented by Jaeger-LeCoultre, ensures exclusivity on your wrist

Fast forward 88 years, and the world is a completely different place. But what stuck around was the timeless design of the Reverso. And paying tribute to the original piece, circa 1931, comes the Tribute Small Seconds. Revealed at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2019, this Reverso features an arresting burgundy brushed dial with a sunray finish. On it are perfectly legible applied markers and dauphine hands. The small seconds at six o’clock brings perfect balance to the aesthetic appearance of the watch. Housed within a stainless steel case—45.6mm long, 27.4mm wide and 8.5mm thick—is the manually-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 822/2 that provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The signature triple-groove detailing on the vertical extremes of the watch give it the classic Reverso look. Paying homage to its polo heritage, the watch is fashioned with a red calf leather strap from Casa Fagliano, a renowned equestrian footwear and saddlery manufacturer from Argentina.
