ExclusiveA True—Yet Exclusive—Crowd-Pleaser: The Rado Captain Cook India Edition

Swiss watch manufacturers Rado have released a new special edition of their signature dive watch. This Captain Cook has been introduced to celebrate 20 years of Ethos—the Indian retailers of luxury watches, jewellery and accessories—and will hence, only be available in India, and exclusively through Ethos

May We Recommend

As ‘masters of materials’, Rado, have been known for their extensive and pioneering work in ceramic as a material used in the construction of timepieces, with achievements in monobloc cases and high-tech ceramic. Fusing ceramic with other materials and using the high-tech variety in combination with metals is also seen among their signature product offerings. One of these is the crowd-pleasing Captain Cook line. Why crowd-pleasing? If some of their other collections—including the True or Centrix lines—have a very specific appeal, the Captain Cook, on the other hand, follows a classic archetype. This is perhaps why the brand chose this collection for the India-exclusive special edition, created in celebration of Ethos’s 20th anniversary. Continuing to please crowds—in one of Rado’s largest markets globally, no less—this is the Captain Cook India Edition.

The Captain Cook And India

It was in the ’60s that the Captain Cook line was first introduced, named after the famous 18th-century British explorer, cartographer and naval officer, Captain James Cook. In line with its celebration of exploration—which was perhaps in a more philosophical way—the brand also introduced the Captain Cook Over-Pole in 1962. A simplified world-timer, this Over-Pole featured Bombay, Calcutta and New Delhi on its time zone bezel. A 2022 re-edition of the Over-Pole featured Mumbai. With Indian cities not often seen on world-timers, these are just a couple of examples of India’s importance for Rado. Further to that, they’ve even launched Hrithik Roshan special-edition Captain Cooks, celebrating their Indian brand ambassador, actor Hrithik Roshan. So it comes as no surprise that they would create a special edition of the contemporary Captain Cook dive timer, exclusively for India, in celebration of Ethos’s milestone year.

The Ocean On The Captain Cook India Edition

Now while this is an India edition, it doesn’t have any detail or element in its design that screams India, so it does continue the appeal of the crowd-pleasing mainline Captain Cook watches. The watch does stand out for its beautiful gradient dial in aquatic hues of turquoise, which is reminiscent of diving and the ocean. It is protected by a sapphire crystal glass with antireflective coating on both sides. On the reverse, the closed caseback features motifs of seahorses—a Captain Cook staple—continuing the oceanic theme.

Running all this is the 80-hour automatic calibre 03.763.835. Another Rado signature is the reference to the self-winding mechanism, on the brand emblem of the dial, which features an anchor motif that rotates when the watch moves—quite like the oscillating winding rotor of the movement.
