An Overview
Swiss watchmaker Oris continues treading the path of saving the environment and working on social initiatives with the launch of the Clean Ocean Limited Edition. Joining the league of the Movember watch, Source Of Life Limited Edition, Aquis Date Relief, and Great Barrier Relief Limited Edition III, this 2019 novelty helps in furthering the brand’s mission to bring change for the better.
In keeping with the spirit of the company that abides by the philosophy of independence, craftsmanship and quality, the Clean Ocean makes a manifold statement. It aims to help make the world a better place by saving an integral part of our survival—the oceans, which cover nearly 70 percent of the planet. Oris has contributed to this vision with the creation of the Clean Ocean Limited Edition.
The Clean Ocean Limited Edition
The Case And Caseback
Based on Oris’ diver’s watch, the Aquis Date, the Clean Ocean symbolises the beauty of nature and the vast oceans via the gradient aqua blue dial, and a unidirectional rotating bezel with an aqua blue ceramic insert. Set inside a 39.5mm stainless steel case that is water resistant to 300m, this timepiece is rugged and durable. A thoughtful gesture serving Oris’ mission, and which can also be a great conversation starter, is the caseback, set with an exquisite medallion made of recycled PET plastic, retrieved from the ocean.
The Dial
In an aqua blue tone, the dial catches the eye with its luminous hands, indices and the sleek date window at six o’clock. The dial with its radiant hue will certainly be a pleasure for the wearer to look at, with every glance at it to check the time.
The Movement
The Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition is powered by an automatic-winding date movement: the Oris Calibre 733, which is based on the Sellita SW200-1. This calibre runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and clocks in a power reserve of 38 hours.
Limited to 2,000 pieces, these waste-to-wonders are presented in a box with an outer shell made of environmentally friendly algae and a recycled plastic inlay. Speaking about this timepiece, Rolf Studer, joint chief executive of Oris, shared, “The Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition is a symbol of our commitment to ridding the world’s oceans of plastic. Oris continues to work with agencies for positive change, and we’re delighted to be working with Pacific Garbage Screening, whose innovative project will bring significant change for the better, in keeping with Oris’ mission.”
An Eye-Opener
The United Nations Environment Programme has estimated that over 8m tonnes of plastic finds its way into the ocean every year, which, in other terms, means one garbage truck every minute. What’s more appalling is that 80 percent of ocean litter is made of plastic, as has been shared by the United Nations. The future is so bleak that some experts suggest that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and going by predictions, 99 percent of all seabirds will have ingested plastic.
Oris For The Ocean
Advocating this cause, Oris has forged a new partnership with Pacific Garbage Screening (PGS), a pioneering young conservation organisation turning plastic into energy. The PGS device looks a like a curved comb. Water flows through the teeth of the comb, which stretch 400m wide and go 35m deep. The specially-designed apparatus collects the waste, and slows and calms the flow of water. The whole thing works without nets, meaning that no fish or other sea creatures are likely to be harmed. This partnership is sure to aid in PGS’s noble venture, making for a pristine ocean for a better and healthier planet for all of its creatures to enjoy.
