ReviewWalking On Sunshine: Introducing The MeisterSinger Unomat In Orange

Blending their age-old concept of timekeeping with a contemporary new aesthetic, the anomalous MeisterSinger Unomat in orange pushes the brand into a relevant new era of haute horlogerie

May We Recommend

One-handed watchmakers MeisterSinger have been experimenting with colour recently, and after the success of their petrol, Bordeaux and dual-toned black-and-yellow dials, this time, a contemporary orange makes its way into the collection via the Unomat, MeisterSinger’s robust, water-resistant, shock- and magnetic-resistant watch. For a brand that follows a traditional sundial-inspired style of timekeeping to go bright orange with their dial this is an aberration of sorts. However, it is a paradox that brings the watch into a contemporary new setting where being in the moment is as important as appreciating everything said moment stands for—and if that’s a bright burst of colour, then so be it.

The MeisterSinger Way Of Slowing Down

MeisterSinger have won numerous awards for their one-handed watches in the 22 years since the brand was founded by German watchmaker and designer Manfred Brassler. Inspired by one of humankind’s first timekeeping instruments, the sundial, Brassler’s idea was to make a timepiece that allows its wearer to appreciate the moment, without having to worry about the frenzied minutes and seconds hands taking that moment away.

Slowly, but surely, the brand have paved their own in the watchmaking industry, combining age-old Swiss watchmaking technique with quality German design.

MeisterSinger Unomat—Time For the ‘Now’

MeisterSinger’s Unomat was first released in 2021, and made waves for its exceptional water resistance and resistance to magnetic fields. (It won the Red Dot design award that year.) With a depth rating of 300m, resistance to magnetic fields and radiation, the robust, shockproof 43mm case of the Unomat, with crown guards, houses the Swiss Sellita SW400 automatic movement, with a power reserve of 38 hours, modified especially for MeisterSinger’s single-handed time-telling style.

Versions of the Unomat released since 2021 have been coloured in traditional shades of black, blue and green. While each of these is stunning in its own right, the 2023 model changes the way one looks at ‘traditional’ time. In a bright orange, the dial itself sets the watch apart from every other MeisterSinger timepiece out there. The gradient dial—darker towards the periphery and lighter around the centre—features highlights in a contrasting black for the single needle-shaped hand and the symmetrical double-digit hour numerals around the dial. The circular date window at six o’clock is larger on the Unomat than on other collections from MeisterSinger. It displays the date in white against a black background.

The Unomat in orange has a Super-LumiNova-filled hand, and hour numerals. It comes mounted on an orange rubber strap to match the dial, adding to the watch’s contemporary outlook—‘elastic, easy to clean and easy to wear’.

Overall, the Unomat in orange is an all-rounder watch for those interested in kicking back and relaxing. Vacation time? Not a problem. The Unomat’s 300m water resistance takes care of it. Shocks? Magnetic radiation from everyday objects? It’s all good. This is the most forward-thinking everyday all-rounder from the brand that likes to take it easy. Why worry about the mundane when Meistersinger’s Unomat has it all covered?
