“A fine watch is an elegant accessory that says a lot about you—are you more sophisticated and classical, or are you bold, or are you forward-thinking,” says Stephane Waser, CEO, Maurice Lacroix, the luxury watchmakers best known for their Aikon line. The brand’s 2022 Pontos S Chronograph may just be a little bit of everything: sporty, classy, bold, retro-classical. First released in the year 2000, the brand have had more than 20 years to perfect this collection, and it seems to have ‘arrived’. With cool complications such as the chronograph, and day-and-date indications, the Pontos now comes with a hardy, scratch-resistant ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale, and subtle nuances that unite the worlds of sport and style.
Deceptively Comprehensive
At first glance, the sandblasted dial looks like it has a neat bi-compax layout, but closer inspection reveals three sub dials and day and date windows at 3 o’clock, in a tri-compax arrangement. The 30-minute register at 12 o’clock and 12-hour counter vertically below it at six o’clock are featured on sandblasted centres and framed with snailed detail. The third—a small seconds display at nine—is in the same finish as the dial, giving the watch a clean, uncluttered look.
Each of the two dial options, silvery white or a dark blue, has its own character too. While the stark white looks sportier, the deep blue looks dressier. With faceted, applied hour markers and partially skeletonised hour and minute hands—featuring Super-LumiNova—it is the minutes track on the inclined flange that stands out, with its red numerals at 10-minute intervals, making the watch easier to read at a glance.
Sporty, Solid, Wearable
The highlight of the watch, though, is its bezel. Beautifully offset against a stainless steel case, the tachymeter-scale bezel is made from black ceramic, a material that can sustain wear and tear over time. “There was an opportunity to do a new Day-Date edition and also to go a little sportier with the new chronograph edition,” says Waser, of the Pontos S Chronograph. “On the classical base, we have a ceramic tachymeter. Instead of three counters, we accentuate two to highlight them in a sporty bi-compax way.”
Then there are the stepped lugs that add character to the 43mm case and also make the wristwatch easy to wear owing to the downward-pointing, intuitively-designed shape of the lugs. The quick-release steel bracelet with its butterfly clasp marked with the brand logo—or easily interchangeable matching nubuck leather-lined nylon strap—wraps around the wrist comfortably. The movement is the 42-hour automatic calibre ML112, and is visible through an exhibition caseback. And finally, the 200m water resistance makes the Pontos S chronograph even more functional.
