Known for their fantastic collaborations that are anything but ordinary, Louis Erard have, once again launched a timepiece that showcases their watchmaking prowess in all its glory. The independent Swiss watchmaker has partnered with the creative horological studio Massena LAB, to launch the Le Chronographe Monopoussoir Louis Erard x Massena LAB—produced in a limited series of 178 pieces only. Available in two variations—rhodium-plated or a gilded dial, this timepiece revisits 19th century haute horlogerie codes albeit through a contemporary lens—an expression of 21st century watchmaking.
This is also not the first time that Louis Erard have collaborated with Massena LAB. While for the GPHG 2022 they focused on the Le Régulateur; this time, they wanted to work with the monopusher chronograph, where there’s a single pusher to start, stop, and reset the chronograph. While this is a complex mechanism, Louis Erard have executed this with utmost simplicity, as indicated by the single 30-minute totaliser on a separate dial at 12 o’clock.
Design wise, this watch borrows from the elegance as found in marine chronometers from the 18th century, where the ultimate goal was the quest for excellence in watchmaking in terms of precision and accuracy.
The watch comes in a 43mm polished stainless-steel case, which is water-resistant to 50m and is presented on a black grained leather strap. This frames an impeccably-finished dial where there is absolutely no compromise on the detailing. It features a rhodium-plated outer flange and counter with a circular satin-finish and diamond-cut corners, a rhodium-plated or 2N gilded lower plate with a grained finish, a silver opaline 30-minute counter with black transfers at 12 o’clock, and the Louis Erard symbol and Massena logo at six o’clock. The blued steel leaf-shaped hands lend a touch of sophistication to this handcrafted timekeeper, which enhances its exclusivity. The watch face is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.
It is driven by the automatic Sellita SW500MPCa calibre, which beats at a frequency of 28,800vph and provides a power reserve of around 48 hours. On turning the watch over, one can view the inner workings of this mechanism, which is meticulously decorated and showcases a special open-worked oscillating weight with the brand symbol.
