ReviewTwinning For Time: Exploring The Jacob & Co Twin Turbo

Why settle for one when you can have double the tourbillons? Introducing Jacob & Co's Twin Turbo

May We Recommend

In the world of luxury, two icons stand tall: high-performance supercars and meticulously crafted watches. They’re both about precision, about mechanical crafts, and about pushing the envelope. Yet, it’s not often that these two realms collide in a way that truly complements each other. But then again, not everyone thinks like Jacob & Co. Meet the Twin Turbo by Jacob & Co. Think of it as the thrilling sensation you get when the roar of a twin-turbo engine fills the air, but for your wrist. Its twin triple-axis tourbillons aren’t just a nod to complex engineering—they’re the heartbeats of this watch, ticking away with the same rhythm and precision as a supercar’s engine.

Double Triple-Axis Trouble: The Calibre JCFM01

The calibre JCFM01, designed by Jacob & Co, stands out from typical double tourbillon designs that use a single barrel and gear train. Instead, each tourbillon in the JCFM01 operates independently, powered by its own gear train and mainspring barrel. Rather than using a traditional differential mechanism, this design uses a friction clutch. This allows the tourbillons to influence each other, achieving synchronised movements and enhancing accuracy. The design ensures consistent energy release as both barrels unwind simultaneously. The mechanism responsible for telling time is kept separate from other functions, keeping the main timekeeping undistracted.

But the JCFM01 offers more than just exactness; it’s a visual spectacle. Each tourbillon moves on multiple axes, creating a captivating motion. This design ensures the balance wheel moves through nearly all potential positions, optimising timekeeping accuracy. Adding to the visual experience, each tourbillon rotates at different speeds, syncing up every two minutes.

The movement comprises an impressive 572 components. Made from sturdy titanium and steel, the movement is a blend of art and engineering. Every aspect reflects Jacob & Co’s dedication to top-notch watchmaking. Whether it’s the hand-polished plates, the finely crafted screws, or any of the numerous details, the attention to the smallest of details shines through. Plus, with its 72-hour power reserve, the captivating dance of the twin triple-axis tourbillons goes uninterrupted.

But the JCFM01 isn’t just about visual charm. It has a sound of its own, thanks to the decimal minute repeater tucked inside. It chimes the hours, ten-minute segments, and minutes using the rich sound of cathedral gongs. This auditory feature enhances the watch’s appeal. And ensuring that the twin tourbillons keep their rhythm is a regulator, discreetly placed between them. It is further supported by a double mechanical safety feature, especially active during the chiming moments.

The Golden Cushion Housing The Twin Turbo

The case of the watch is quite substantial, measuring 57.30mm by 51mm, with a thickness of 16.90mm. Its dimensions give it a prominent and robust appearance on the wrist. Crafted from 18-karat rose gold, the case has a warm, rich hue that contrasts beautifully with the cool, transparent nature of the domed sapphire crystal used for the glass and caseback, which also allows for a deeper appreciation of the movement from various angles. Beyond the aesthetic value, the sapphire crystal is incredibly hard and scratch-resistant as well, ensuring the inner workings of the watch are visible while being protected from everyday wear and tear. The shape of the case is somewhat reminiscent of a cushion, with softened, rounded edges that lend a contemporary touch to the design.

A Smoked Sapphire Crystal Dial

The dial of the watch, made from smoked sapphire crystal, has a distinct and sophisticated look, allowing a peek into the intricate workings beneath while providing a dark, elegant backdrop. This subdued hue is beautifully complemented by the applied Jacob & Co logo, serving as a subtle branding touch without being overpowering. Surrounding the core dial is a red Neoralithe inner ring, which adds a pop of colour and aids in marking seconds, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the design.

Moving on to the strap, it’s made from black leather, offering a comfortable and timeless appeal that pairs seamlessly with a variety of outfits, be it formal or casual. The strap’s classic look beautifully juxtaposes with the deployant buckle in 18-karat rose gold. While it provides a secure fit, it also echoes the luxurious gold elements of the watch case.

Such a limited run means that only a handful of enthusiasts or collectors around the world will have the privilege of owning this particular timepiece. It’s not just about the mechanics or the design; it’s about being a part of a select group that appreciates and possesses a unique piece of horological artistry.
