ReviewStreamlined X: Jacob & Co’s Epic X V2

Jacob & Co have created a refreshed Epic X—updated to be a sleeker and more streamlined edition from the brand’s sporty collection

May We Recommend

While Jacob & Co have become known for some of the most technically sophisticated and artistically outstanding watches in the previous decade, such as the Astronomia and the Twin Turbo Furious, the Epic X has been—and continues to be—Jacob & Co’s most versatile and easy-to-wear timepiece. First introduced in 2015 by Benjamin Muller—the French jewellery and watch designer and founder of independent watch company M Benjamin—before it was re-licensed under Jacob & Co, the Epic X was originally known as the Spyder. It has been distinguished by dramatic angled lugs that extend from the bezel to clasp the strap—like spider legs. Jacob & Co have now introduced a new iteration of the Epic X, featuring subtle but important design changes to the case and dial.

Sleek X

The Epic X receives a slightly sleeker appearance and an 18-karat rose gold treatment. Its 44mm case has been updated with smooth lugs and a new caseband that extends far outside the circle of the case to form a set of crown guards.

The Watch Guide

The Epic X is powered by Concepto's amazingly light, open-worked Calibre JCAM45—an open-worked movement that was carefully developed from the ground up

The bracelet is a completely new design, inspired by the case’s distinct angles and curves. Each of the five-link rows is a three-dimensional sculpture that has been polished and chamfered

The collection’s signature element, the X figure, is made up of a pair of lugs interconnected by vertical bridges of the skeleton movement, creating a continuous shape throughout the piece. The formerly stepped bezel has been smoothened and polished, with a sharper angle. The bracelet is a completely new design, inspired by the case’s distinct angles and curves. Each of the five-link rows is a three-dimensional sculpture that has been polished and chamfered. It has a curved base and a half-octagon profile. This, combined with rigorous articulation research, results in an excellent fit on the wrist. Each of these links is made from 18-karat rose gold.

Skeleton X

The Epic X is powered by Concepto’s amazingly light, open-worked Calibre JCAM45—an open-worked movement that was carefully developed from the ground up. It has a skeletonised barrel held in place by a separate bridge, allowing the wind state to be approximated from the mainspring coils. The barrel and balance are vertically oriented, as they are on most open-worked watches. However, to allow an unobstructed view of the balancing wheel below, the gear train does not transverse the movement’s central axis. Instead, it is relegated to the left, with a pinion above the movement’s second wheel driving the minute wheel directly. By doing so, the dial is opened up, revealing the escapement and balance wheel in their entirety.

The full-black DLC variant with a black rubber strap sits on the complete opposite end of the spectrum.  It features a steel case and includes the company’s distinctive black rubber honeycomb strap

The redesigned series, with its innately powerful and assertive personality, hasn’t lost any of its goodness but is now a sleeker and more streamlined take on the original sporty collection.
