In this era of peak TV, actors from the small screen are as spoken about as international movie stars. Hollywood glamour today is incomplete without those whom we watch every week at home on our smart TVs and hand-held devices. So it’s no surprise then that the Emmys have become one of those events of tinsel-town that you just can’t ignore. Every September, the brightest stars of television step out by the dozen to grace the occasion of the Primetime Emmy Awards, making impression after sartorial impression. And, along with the colour palettes and silhouettes that reflect the trends of the season, there are always a few exemplary timepieces spotted on the wrists of the A-list TV stars that make an appearance. For men, the classic black tuxedo never goes out of fashion, but every now and then we see other styles such as retro white dinner jackets and velvet. This year, men turned up in a variety of hues, including shades of gold, red and blue. The watches though remained rather classic. Timeless three-hand dress watches were seen aplenty, with a smattering of complications. Here are a few of the watches worn by stars of some of the most talked-about shows on television at this year’s Emmys. It was IWC and Omega that made the biggest mark.
Kit Harington | IWC Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36
The Emmy-nominated Game Of Thrones actor, who portrayed Jon Snow in the biggest TV series of our time, showed up in a black Givenchy tuxedo but decided to go without a tie. In contrast to the oversized lapels on his jacket was his modestly-sized IWC timepiece. The unisex Da Vinci Automatic watch comes in a 36mm steel case and features a moon phase indicator at 12 o’clock on the silver-plated dial. With blue hands and indexes, this watch comes with a blue alligator leather strap. The colour palette he chose was definitely more Stark than Targaryen—just like his character.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau | IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
From house Stark to house Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau made a bolder statement in signature Lannister gold. The Emmy nominee, who played the ‘kingslayer’ Jamie Lannister, chose a golden Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo that was in line with the continuing trend of colour in black-tie attire. And in keeping with the extravagant look was an IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, set in a large 44.2mm, 18-karat gold case. With a sunray-finished grey dial, the watch is fashioned with a black alligator leather strap. The automatic movement within powers the date and power reserve indicator at three o’clock, the month at six, the small seconds and day at nine and the moon phase at 12 o’clock.
Sterling K Brown | IWC Portugieser Automatic
The two-time Emmy-winning This Is Us actor, who was nominated this year as well, has been featured on best-dressed lists owing to his red carpet choices in the past. He didn’t disappoint at this year’s Emmys either. Dressed in a Brioni number, Brown was synchronised in maroon and black, down to the bowtie, and his timepiece wasn’t clashing either. The steel-and-black IWC Portugieser Automatic watch he wore even has a red accent—seen on the power reserve indicator at three o’clock. The black dial features applied numeral indexes, as well as the date and small seconds at six and nine o’clock respectively. The automatic movement within offers a 168-hour power reserve.
Justin Hartley | Omega De Ville Hour Vision Blue
Sterling K Brown’s on-screen brother, Justin Hartley—who plays Kevin Pearson on This Is Us—also added a splash of colour on the Emmys purple carpet this year. The Daytime Emmy-nominated, former star of The Young And The Restless wore an all-blue tux by Isaia, and to complement the hue, he chose an Omega De Ville Hour Vision with a blue dial. The watch, with Roman numeral hour markers, features the date at three o’clock with central hour, minute and seconds hands. Set within the 41mm steel case—water resistant to 100m—is an Omega certified Master Chronometer movement.
Alfie Allen | Omega De Ville Prestige Black
Another Game Of Thrones actor who was nominated for an Emmy this year, Alfie Allen turned up in a black tuxedo from British label Dunhill. Allen, who played the ill-fated Theon Greyjoy in the series, kept things classic with a black-and-white look, which was even mirrored by his choice of timepiece—an Omega De Ville Prestige Black. The dress watch in a 39.5mm steel case features a black dial with Roman numeral and baton-shaped indexes, along with a date aperture, power reserve indicator and small seconds at three, six and nine o’clock respectively. The movement within is certified chronometer in-house calibre, which offers a 48-hour power reserve.
James Van Der Beek | IWC Ingenieur Automatic
Actor James Van Der Beek, who is best known for his titular role in iconic teen drama Dawson’s Creek, was more recently seen in the Emmy-winning series Pose. The actor attended the Emmys wearing a Brioni number in velvet. The rose-coloured jacket was complemented by a matching bowtie and an IWC watch in 18-karat red gold. The IWC Ingenieur Automatic timepiece is a three-hand classic with a sunray-finished grey dial featuring applied indexes and the date at three o’clock. The 40mm gold case is water resistant to about 120m and comes with a black alligator leather strap.
