Scratch at the surface of any watch enthusiast, and you might find an automobile fanatic underneath. There are but a handful of objects that embody the perfect marriage between art and science as well as cars and watches do. It’s not just the mechanical craftsmanship or innovations that lure the admirers in, but the design and aesthetic as well. There has always been an unbroken bond between the two industries, and since 2011, the collaboration between Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari and Swiss watchmaker Hublot has bestowed upon us timepieces that honour their luxury pedigree. From variations of the Big Bang to the incredible MP05 LaFerrari and, two years ago, the Techframe—all of these releases were far, far ahead of their game, and showed us the stunning outcome of putting precision and innovation at the forefront. This year, it’s the Classic Fusion Ferrari GT.
The Italian Job
Driven directly by the head of design at Ferrari, Flavio Manzoni, the form of the Classic Fusion Ferrari GT draws parallels with the carmaker’s GT (Gran Turismo) series. Parting with the chunky angularity that is typical of the brand’s timepieces, this GT watch is designed purely at Centro Stile Ferrari—the brand’s in-house design centre in Maranello, Italy—with Hublot only manufacturing the construction and creating the internal mechanism.
Suspended within the bezel is the round case, and the void between the two gives this piece a sort of visual lightness, which is a classic Ferrari characteristic. Soft, curvy lines are what define GT coach-building techniques, and that trait has beautifully trickled down to this timepiece as well. Available in King Gold, titanium, and a special polymer matrix composite called 3D carbon, the Classic Fusion Ferrari GT is 45mm wide, but sits beautifully on the wrist on account of being considerably thin.
Under The Hood
The engine used here is the stellar in-house UNICO calibre HUB1280, which the wearer can enjoy, owing to the watch’s partial skeletal dial. This movement comes with a flyback chronograph feature and beats at a frequency of 4Hz, lending the watch an impressive power reserve of three days. Flip the timepiece over and you’ll find that the design of the rotor is reminiscent of a vintage Ferrari steering wheel—a nice, little touch to an already alluring watch.
What the Hublot Ferrari GT represents then is the perfect fusion of the two allied worlds of automobiles and horlogerie. Despite blending a number of elements from the automotive world, the overall product still draws in horological purists. After all, inside almost every watch enthusiast is a motorhead who values aesthetics and mechanical prowess above all.
