In a remarkable convergence of Swiss luxury and sustainability, the renowned watchmaker Hublot and the iconic coffee brand Nespresso have come together for an extraordinary venture, which has resulted in a new Big Bang timepiece. The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin fuses the ethos of recycling and circularity into its very design. This avant-garde timepiece is the first-ever to incorporate materials as unique as recycled Nespresso aluminium capsules and coffee grounds. The outcome of this unique partnership, the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, resonates with the shared principles of innovation, excellence, and sustainability, echoing the intrinsic values that both these iconic brands stand for.
The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Blends Style With Sustainability
Hublot, famed for their ‘Art of fusion’, have been brewing a revolution in the watchmaking industry with innovative alloys and composites, making rubber straps a prime ingredient. Simultaneously, Nespresso, since 1986, have been serving a rich blend of precision and unforgettable taste with their portioned coffee system. They have also achieved even greater value with their recycling system, where aluminium and coffee grounds are separated and repurposed. This process gave birth to a truly unique offering: the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, partially prepared from a coffee capsule-strap and case. This bold preparation is highlighted by the iconic Nespresso ‘N’ etched on the crown and the vibrant green colour mimicking the shade of the Master Origins Peru Organic capsule, which is known for its rich blend of acidic and fruity notes.
A limited edition of 200 pieces, the Big Bang Nespresso comes housed in a 42mm case, in satin-finished and polished, green, anodised, recycled aluminium, 28 percent of which is derived from Nespresso coffee capsules. It is not just the crown and pusher that get this treatment. Even the back of the case and container are made from recycled eco-titanium. The titanium deployant buckle of the rubber strap, with its decorative recycled aluminium cap, and the sport buckle of the Velcro strap, are also dressed in the same green.
The Nespresso Cuppa Fusion
Creating this timepiece was no quick espresso shot. It took Hublot a full year of perfecting ideas with Nespresso to achieve a perfect hue of colours across seven different materials that make up the watch, from anodised aluminium, varnish on the dial and hands, the Hublot logo on the glass, the rubber of the strap, to the fabric, lining and hook and loop tape of the Velcro strap.
Crafting the rubber strap required the right balance of ingredients, much like a perfect cup of coffee, to achieve the desired colour and quality. For the fabric strap, Hublot teamed up with SingTex, a Nespresso partner already using recycled coffee grounds to weave a fabric called Scafé. This 100-percent recycled fabric, made from five percent coffee grounds and 95 percent recycled polyester, is strapped onto a watch for the first time, delivering an ingenious mix of endurance and viability. Striking great balance to ensure the strap’s longevity, the rubber strap fuses 4.1 percent coffee grounds and 8.2 percent recycled white rubber, making it a perfect fusion of durability and sustainability.
Water-resistant up to 100m, the recycled aluminium case of this ‘brewtiful’ timepiece houses the HUB1280 Unico self-winding chronograph movement, which achieves a frequency of 4Hz and a power reserve of around 72 hours. The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin stands as a symbol, a flavourful testament by Hublot and Nespresso, showing how recycling can add value and that circularity is a concept as limitless as the power of caffeine.
