Since 2013, Carl F. Bucherer have been associated with the Manta Trust—a marine wildlife conservation organisation, which focuses on creating a sustainable and healthy future for the oceans where the biodiversity of these marine creatures is preserved, so that they are able to thrive. The Lucerne-based independent watchmaker have churned out several timepieces inspired by these marine giants since the beginning of their collaboration, and have also sponsored projects that have been undertaken to conduct research on the manta rays. And this year, they have come out with a stunning deep-green timepiece as the Manta Trust embarks on a research expedition in Ecuador—home to the largest-known population of manta rays in the world.

Not many would be aware but when it comes to the fish species, manta rays are endowed with the largest brains among their marine counterparts, and hence display extreme intelligence. However, they are under severe threat due to overfishing and often get trapped in angling lines. But with the work being done by the trust at the local level by mobilising resources, they have been able to restrict overfishing to a large extent, thereby providing a safe habitat for the mantas. Carl F. Bucherer have also been actively supporting this cause and a portion from each timepiece’s sale is donated directly to the charity in order to bolster their endeavours towards marine conservation.

The Swiss player have dedicated their Patravi model for creating timepieces for the Manta Trust and this one is no different. As the name suggests, the new release comes in a gorgeous verdant hue with a lacquered green dial, showcasing an intricate wave-design detailing. The brand chose this hue as it is inspired by the emerald green waters around Isla de La Plata—a small island, about 40 kms off the Ecuadorian coast that plays host to more than 22,000 manta rays, who gather there around August and September, every year.
