May We Recommend
Baume & Mercier’s Clifton Baumatic family has a set of significant watches under its wing—all featuring highly accurate, well-constructed movements, enclosed in solid packages with the right mix of contemporary aesthetics. And you get all of this without burning a hole in your pocket. These factors, and more, make this collection perfect for those on the lookout for their first ‘proper’ watch. And now, the brand has opened a new chapter with an offering that’s bound to rope in aficionados on the hunt for something a bit more complicated—the Baumatic Perpetual Calendar.
Affordable elegance is the theme here, but Baume & Mercier has made sure not to skimp out on opulence. The 42mm case has an exquisite red gold construction that contrasts beautifully with the off-white dial. Usually, perpetual calendars have a visually heavy appearance, considering that they generally display the time, date, day, month and year, all at once, and quite often even the moon phase. However, this timepiece takes on the task effortlessly. The dial has been sandblasted to give it a porcelain-like finish, which pairs well with the gold-toned hour, minute and seconds hands.
Three sub-dials exhibit the functions of the perpetual calendar. The one at nine o’clock indicates the day of the week, the second at 12 indicates the month and leap year cycle, and the third at three is for the date. The classic blue hands on the sub-dial offer brilliant contrast against the rest of the watch—an elegant touch. Meanwhile, a moon phase indicator at six o’clock anchors the dial.
The Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar is powered by a new calibre, the BM13- 1975AC-1. This COSC-certified, selfwinding movement is anti-magnetic up to 1,500 gauss, making it resistant to most magnetic fields that one encounters on a daily basis. All features enfolded, this watch also offers a power reserve of a whopping 120 hours, and a service interval of seven years, making it clear that this Baumatic is set out to be a no-nonsense timepiece meant for budding watch enthusiasts and experienced horologists alike.
