Background

Jacob & Co. is renowned for being unconventional whilst retaining its elegant persona. Deriving its roots from the gem-setting traditions, the brand unleashed timepieces that defied the common grounds of watchmaking. One such set of timepieces to come out of the brand's doors was the Jacob & Co. Astronomia collection. Launched in 2014, the Astronomia collection is a beautiful reinterpretation of celestial bodies and the universe. As per the founder of the brand, Jacob Arabo, “Astronomia was inspired by the universe and all the ideas and wonderment of celestial bodies.” The centre stage of the collection is the Astronomia calibre. This unique, patented mechanical ballet is equipped with four vertical arms that are powered by a central axis which also powers the vertical arms in a clockwise motion. The collection also features the proprietary 288-faceted-Jacob-Cut diamond. This diamond is exactly the same weight as the globe, tourbillon, and time display as this is important to maintain the equilibrium of the movement.

Astronomia Tourbillon

The Astronomia Tourbillon is a series of timepieces that offer a vivid look into the iconic Astronomia calibre. Featuring a triple-axis tourbillon, the Astronomia Tourbillon is also fitted with a hand-painted magnesium globe that turns every 30 seconds. The time is displayed over a skeleton dial fixed over a patented differential that keeps the 12/6 orientation of the time display corrected. Not falling far from the roots, the Astronomia Tourbillon is also available in a variant that is fitted with diamonds and multi-coloured precious stones called the Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette.

Astronomia Sky

Jacob Arabo, the founder of Jacob & Co. has a certain affinity toward astronomy. This affection is reflected in the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Sky series. The Astronomia Sky displays sidereal time on the main dial with an exact representation of the stars and on the periphery dial are the month markers. The seconds are displayed vertically on an independent axis. Whereas, the triple-axis tourbillon fires up the dial with mechanical aesthetics. The brand also decided to place a day/night indicator on the central axis marked by a realistic globe made with titanium.

Astronomia Casino

For most, timepieces are a great way of telling time but for some, it can entail something more, something exhilarating. With the Astronomia Casino, the case is inciting the essence of responsible gambling. Featuring a hand-painted roulette table, the Astronomia Casino depicts the wild side of casinos. This roulette can also be animated on demand. Apart from the table, the timepiece also features a tourbillon. Though, unlike most timepieces, the Astronomia Casino is fixed with a double-axis tourbillon. Apart from the tourbillon, the Astronomia Casino also features a hand-painted magnesium globe. Shining on the traditions of the brand, the Astronomia Casino Baguette features a diamond-studded experience of the roulette table on the wrist.

Astronomia Art

Astronomia is known for its iconic movement encased inside the intricately crafted sapphire crystal case. Rejoiced by the feedback, the brand decided to raise the stakes in an eloquent manner. Jacob & Co. entered the world of High Watchmaking with the introduction of art pieces inside the massive case and called it Astronomia Art. Placing a piece of art inside the iconic movement was a task in itself but it was achieved using traditional métiers d'art and modern technologies. These pieces of art include dragon and phoenix and various animals such as cobras, spiders, lions, and tigers. Apart from animals, Astronomia Art also features zodiac signs and skulls with eyes made of rubies. Apart from displaying the zoological creatures, the series also features a timepiece that pays a warm tribute to India. Astronomia Art India features the iconic movement intertwined with various Indian structures such as the Taj Mahal, the Qutub Minar, the Lotus Temple, and the India Gate. First of its kind, the timepiece requires countless hours to craft these miniatures.

Astronomia Solar

There is a distinction between being over the top yet reigning inside the subtlest of the possibilities and that was very well achieved by the Astronomia Solar. Astronomia Solar recreates the solar system on the dial with finesse. Powered by the most compact iteration of the original Astronomia calibre, the JCAM19 features two rotating platforms and a flying tourbillon. The top platform features a centrally mounted ‘Jacob-Cut’ diamond representing the sun with three planets made from semi-precious stones rotating around it. Rotating anti-clockwise is the main plate fixed with the rest of the planets. The anti-clockwise rotating plate was the newest addition to the Astronomia collection and can also be found in the Fleurs De Jardin collection. Another edition is the Astronomia Solar Bitcoin. Paying a hearty tribute to the world of cryptocurrency, the timepiece is cased in a black DLC Titanium case and features a bitcoin logo and on one axis there is a rocket ship. On the central axis is a black globe, whereas, the sun is represented by a yellow sapphire and the moon is represented by a ‘Jacob-Cut’ diamond. The main plate is designed to look like a microchip, the backbone of the cryptocurrency.

Astronomia Maestro

Replacing the time display on the axis and mounting it in the centre, the Astronomia Maestro takes the complication into a more complicated draft. Apart from the triple-axis tourbillon and a ‘Jacob-Cut’ diamond, there is also a worldtimer complication displayed on the oversized globe. The oversized globe is further complemented by a hand-painted aventurine dial with planets placed on it depicting the Milky Way galaxy. Over the aventurine dial is one of the most complicated complications, the minute repeater. The visible gongs and hammers are further beautified by a hand-painted miniaturised astronaut.

Limited Editions

Based on the Astronomia Sky, the Astronomia Everest pays homage to the Swedish explorer and Guinness World record holder, Johan Ernst Nilson. The timepiece features a piece of rock from Mt. Everest in the centre of the dial, two buckets filled with water from the South and North pole and a Super-Luminova Globe. Limited to 24 units, the buyer gets to visit the site on Mt. Everest from where the pieces of rock were collected. With every purchase, 10% of the amount will go to charity. Another artistic timepiece by the brand is the Astronomia Alec Monopoly. Made in partnership with Alec Monopoly, a graffiti artist renowned for inventing the characters of the board game, Monopoly. The timepiece features the characters from the board game on the dial without getting in the way of the complex Astronomia calibre.
