About the IWC Ingenieur Collection
History
The post-war era was the era of engineers. Designed and crafted for these skilled professionals, IWC launched the IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur collection in 1955. The first Ingenieur was equipped with a thick anti-magnetic case. Known for its military applications, the anti-magnetic case was needed for the professionals who worked under strong electromagnetic effects. To curb this problem, extensive modifications were made and were fitted with a unique bidirectional automatic movement by Albert Pellaton. The most distinctive Ingenieur watch of that period, however, was crafted by the watch-making maestro Gerald Genta, who infused brilliant engineering in crafting the Ingenieur SL or Jumbo Ingenieur.
Features
Crafted differently from the first iteration, the modern-day Ingenieur features a calm and complacent design. Inside the Ingenieur Automatic series, the date window at the 3 o’clock marker is a reminder of the original timepiece. With a touch of modernism, the Ingenieur Chronograph series features three sub-dials and a tachymeter on the outer flange of the dial. These sub-dials and the tachymeter are useful for measuring the speed of an object. These dials display hours, minutes and seconds at the 9, 12, and 6 o’clock markers.
Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month
Adding a mix of modernity, the Ingenieur collection equipped itself with a rather unique interpretation of a perpetual calendar. The Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month features a totaliser sub-dial at the 12 o’clock marker with a flyback function making it a chronograph. Making it a perpetual calendar, the timepiece features a leap year marker inside the small seconds sub-dial and the date and month are digitally represented at 9 and 3 o’clock, respectively.
Events
IWC Schaffhausen grandly celebrated its partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team by putting up an exclusive pop-up exhibition in The Watch Gallery at Selfridges Wonder Room, London in May 2013. The exhibition proudly displayed the suave new look of the remodelled 2013 Ingenieur collection that is still carried today.

The Ingenieur series from IWC was designed to benefit engineers in their ability to be reliable in any situation they may come across. Ingenieurs have a come a long way since then. Early Ingenieurs were restricted to 40 mm diameters, with a shift to larger 46 mm diameters more recently. Although there is a shift to the older 40 mm roots of late, this model stays true to its stylistic roots characterizing the Ingenieur collection. At 46 mm, it is not exactly shy but its titanium case definitely makes it lighter than it looks. The silver toned dial although glossy, is smartly mused by the thickly outlined-in-black hands and hour indicators offering a glimmer of non-reflectivity. This along with the grey titanium metal contrasting bezel screw and dark strap give this Ingenieur an aura of potency.
