About the Baume & Mercier Riviera Collection

Baume & Mercier’s Riviera collection, first launched in 1973, is one of the brand’s most iconic lines, characterised by its distinctive dodecagonal (12-sided) bezel. Designed during the era when bold, sporty watches were becoming popular, the Riviera collection combined luxury and casual elegance, capturing the spirit of the Mediterranean coastline after which it was named. The line was reimagined in 2021, bringing modern updates to the original design, making it a symbol of versatile sophistication and sporting prowess.

Design And Aesthetics

The Riviera collection stands out due to its bold yet refined design. The hallmark of the collection is its dodecagonal bezel, which immediately sets it apart from typical round or square watches. This geometric bezel is often crafted from polished stainless steel, with some models featuring combinations of materials like titanium or PVD finishes, adding a modern touch to the vintage aesthetic. Case sizes range from 36mm to 43mm, making the collection accessible to a wide audience, including men and women. The dials are also a highlight, often featuring transparent smoked dials, which reveal the inner workings of the automatic movement, or sunburst finishes for a more classic look. Riviera models are typically equipped with sword-shaped hands and bold Roman numerals or indexes, ensuring legibility and enhancing the watch’s sporty yet elegant vibe. Many models also include a sapphire crystal caseback, showcasing the intricate Swiss automatic movements within. The collection’s distinctive aesthetic pairs well with the sporty and elegant steel bracelets or rubber straps that ensure comfort and durability.

Iterations

Baume & Mercier has expanded the Riviera collection to include a variety of models with different complications and materials. The Riviera Automatic models are powered by the Sellita SW200 movement, providing reliable performance, while the more high-end models feature Baume & Mercier's in-house Baumatic calibre BM13-1975A, offering a robust power reserve and enhanced accuracy. The Riviera Moonphase models add an element of classic horological complication, featuring beautifully executed moon phase displays, blending elegance with functionality. Additionally, the Riviera GMT is a highly practical option for frequent travellers, offering a second timezone display.

ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

Hailing from the Bautamic family tree of in-house automatic movements, BM13-1975A is based on the BM12 calibre. This Swiss-made movement boasts a power reserve of a whopping 120 hours standing par with the rest of the calibres under the Baumatic umbrella. The present version is COSC-certified and supports the functioning of the basic three-central hands and date display. The 21 jewels not only reduce friction between the components but also also double as a decoration on the movement.
