The Earth’s revolution with respect to the distant stars is consistent and predictable and has always been one of the most accurate ways of time determination. The measurements from these observations of the starry skies were unparalleled, until recently when watchmakers started to make high precision watches that could match the highest standards. The line ‘Constellation’ draws its name from Omega’s chronometric achievements across the world’s major observatories especially when in 1951, Omega set new records for precision in every category.
True to its lineage, this Constellation 2009 model exudes perfection across all aspects. The watch has a 27 mm stainless steel bracelet and round case Cradled by the case is the beautiful mother-of-pearl dial with eleven diamond set indexes, sword shaped hands and a date window at the 3 o’ clock position. Its bezel is engraved with Roman numerals and the women’s watch has the famous horizontal “Griffes”, or claws on its sides made of 18K red gold. A dome shaped anti-reflective scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial. Watch aficionados can have a glimpse of the device’s movement through the transparent back case. The instrument has a durable built quality and is water resistant to depths of 100 metres.
The watch is powered by Omega’s Caliber 8520 and has a self-winding movement. Thus the chronometer is highly accurate owing to its Co-Axial Escapement that accounts for greater precision and stability even in extreme conditions. The watch has bidirectional automatic winding that significantly reduces winding time. A rhodium plated finish with exclusive Geneva waves in arabesque top off the workings of the device. The watch also boasts of a remarkable power reserve of 50 hours.
Until the late 1960s, the shape of the dial in the Constellation series resembled an upside down pie-pan, due to which the model earned the nickname “pie-pan.”
The Constellation Collection by Omega was launched in 1952, has since been renowned for its ultra precise movements and elegantly refined cases. Century, a limited edition wristwatch unveiled in 1948 on the firm’s 100th anniversary, is the progenitor of the collection. Due to the overwhelming response received by this watch, the brand launched the Constellation collection, which imbibed the same qualities. In 1982, the Constellation “Manhattan” was launched, with which the four claws or “griffes” were introduced that keeps the sapphire crystal case intact to securely render the watch waterproof.
The Omega Constellation collection has been exemplified in several sub collections that include the Gents’ Collection, Ladies’ Collection, Orbis Constellation Star, Sedna, and the Luxury Edition. The watches in the Gents’ collection feature distinctive design factors – the renowned claws on the case, horizontal links for utmost comfort, and a Constellation star, which is situated at the 6o’ clock position. Featuring a vast range of watches with different sizes, metals, dials, and diamond options to choose from, the Ladies’ Collection contains at least one watch to suit every wrist. The Orbis Constellation Star supports Orbis International – which gives advanced eye care to some of the most inaccessible regions in the world, and it’s Flying Eye Hospital. An 18-carat rose gold alloy, consisting of copper, palladium, and at least 75% gold, has been used to craft the Constellation Sedna. This breathtaking alloy adds an innovative and stunning appeal to the watch, giving it a long lasting rose-coloured hue. The magnificent Omega Constellation Luxury Edition watches showcase multitude of diamonds in spectacular supernova pattern, which dazzles the eyes of the onlooker.
A gold Omega Constellation “Manhattan” was worn by the former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. One of the 20th century’s most popular musicians, cultural icon, actor, and American singer, Elvis Presley had worn a black-dialled Constellation Calendar.
