IWC since its inception in the 1800s has been well known as a brand that consistently brings about technological advancements. Being an integrated manufacturer, all the parts of a watch are created and assembled in-house at IWC. This brand is the force behind the anti-magnetic and anti-gravity movements. The brand is known throughout the globe for its complicated yet elegant timepieces.
The IW386501 belongs to the Ingenieur Double Chronograph Titanium series that has been inspired by materials typically used in Formula 1 cars– ceramic, titanium and rubber. The model features a double chronograph movement that can record as many split or lap times as one wants without stopping. This is quite a difficult complication to perfect which the timepiece aces with impeccable ease.
The model sports a round case made in titanium that is 45 mm in diameter and 16 mm in thickness. Its rubber bracelet is black in colour with a titanium tang buckle and a screw-down crown. The dial is silver plated flaunting 29 jewels with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass cover that has anti-reflective coating on both the sides. Complimented with a solid case back that is engraved with serial number and the brands hallmarks, the watch has a fixed bezel made in titanium. The dial is complimented by a white painted black bordered stick style hands and markers that enhance visibility.
This timepiece has a power reserve of 44 hours, IW386501 is water-resistant to a depth of 120 meters. Featuring an automatic day and date function located at the 3 o’clock position, it is equipped with a self-winding automatic mechanical chronograph movement and a split-seconds hand. It is also equipped with a stopwatch function and 3 sub-dials located at the 6 o’clock, 9 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions respectively.
The IWC Ingenieur collection was born and perfected as an answer to cumbersome drawbacks from using too many technical appliances in wristwatches. These watches were designed to reduce ill-effects caused by magnetic fields encountered by engineers. Extensive modifications to stem this problem and a unique bidirectional automatic movement by Albert Pellaton paved the way for the Ingenieur collection’s launch in 1955. The ingenious winding system perfected by Pellaton winds movement when the rotor moves either way, infinitely more efficient than the common restrictive unidirectional movement. The most distinctive Ingenieur watch of that period however, was crafted by the watch-making maestro Gerald Genta, who infused brilliant engineering in the making of the Ingenieur SL or Jumbo Ingenieur as it is often called.
The Ingenieur novelty lies in capturing succinctly the essence of that which it emulates. IWC famously partnered with Mercedes AMG in year 2005 and brought forth two titanium cased models creatively emulating race-car styles. The 2013 Ingenieur watch collection showers more affection on the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 collaboration. The watch exudes performance efficiency, energy conservation and sporty appeal. Materials such as ceramic, titanium and carbon commonly used in Formula One have been incorporated in this collection to showcase their strong bond. An ideal example of this is the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic which has been styled primarily from material typically used in motor racing.
IWC Schaffhausen grandly celebrated its partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team by putting up an exclusive pop-up exhibition in The Watch Gallery at Selfridges Wonder Room, London in May 2013. The exhibition proudly displayed the suave new look of the remodelled 2013 Ingenieur collection. IWC also celebrated the unveiling of two brand new models in the year 2014 in Schaffhausen, the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic as well as Ingenieur Dual Time.
