The SevenFriday S-Series Limited Edition Watch S1/01 launched at Baselworld 2017, is a breath of fresh air in an environment of repetitive timepieces. This is not the first time that the young Zurich-based watch brand has introduced an industrial themed timepiece. From their iconic M-Series to the Limited Edition Hot Rod watch, the unconventional watch brand has kept to an overall industrial theme.

SevenFriday S-Series: About the Watch

Paying homage to and taking its industrial roots forward, the SevenFriday S-Series S1/01 is a watch that perfectly represents clean technology, especially vis a vis its recyclable animation ring (more on that later). The watch features the signature rounded square box case and openwork dial design. It encapsulates a sense of luxury despite being heavily inspired by industrial processes.

The 47mm rounded square case is a combination of polished and sandblasted stainless steel that features a polished stainless steel bezel. The closed caseback is also made of polished stainless steel and has an NFC chip embedded behind the signature globe engraving.

At this point you might be thinking that a 47mm solid stainless steel case is too big and heavy to be wearing on your wrist all day, but this is not the case. The characteristic SevenFriday ‘TV screen’-shaped case features a translucent nylon animation ring (that is SevenFriday’s terminology for the outer case decoration) wrapped around it. This visually breaks up the solid polished effect of the bezel giving the watch a lighter and altered aesthetic. The nylon animation ring further showcases the four metallic blue PVD structural screws, adding a unique aesthetic to the watch.

Interestingly, and a feature which is possibly a first for the watch industry, the nylon ring is constructed from entirely recyclable materials and hence has the recycling symbol that is customised with the number “7” for SevenFriday. Calling it a “nod to clean industries”, the watch brand definitely brings to the forefront its dedication to consciously construct a great-looking watch while also focusing on environmental responsibility and of course holding on to a sense of luxury.

Dial: Openwork Dial Design With A Multi-Layer Interface

At first instance, the dial of the watch looks like a skeleton watch but on closer look, it turns out to be a unique combination of an openwork dial design with the manifestation of a skeleton watch. The unique design of the watch allows the wearer to witness the intricate parts of a movement without truly being a skeleton dial. The openwork dial of the SevenFriday S-Series is a multi-layer interface. The outer plate is made of an opalescent gun-metal with the inner rhodium dial featuring luminous indexes. The “SEVENFRIDAY” plate placed at 12 o’clock is made of fine sandblasted rhodium. Additionally, the dial is decorated with a sandblasted “S” plate placed between 4 and 5 o’clock. Providing additional resistance is the use of specially hardened anti-reflective mineral glass over the dial.

The centre of the dial features an intricately designed wheel-like structure that holds the hour and the minutes hands (which look like an extension of the mechanical engine residing under the hood). The colour contrast between the metallic blue hour hand and the metal minute hand allows for easy and convenient reading of time.

Almost all SevenFriday watches are powered by a Japanese movement and the S-Series is no different. The watch is powered by a precise, robust and dependable automatic Miyota 82S5 movement. It features an open balance wheel that allows the wearer to witness the intricate workings of the movement, leaving little to their imagination, which as studies say is always a good thing! The watch too has been specifically built to display the wheels and gears of the engineering marvel that resides inside. With a power reserve of 40 hours, it suffices to say that once fully wound, you can relax and not think about recharging your watch for a full day and a half.

NFC Enabled: A Much-Needed Security Measure For Your Watch

Furthermore, the watch also features an NFC (Near Field Compatibility) technology chip that can be used with the SevenFriday app. The NFC feature is an effort from the brand to prevent the selling of fake SevenFriday watches. What does it do? It helps in authenticating the watch with its mobile application: the SevenFriday App. This feature not only helps in securing the customer from purchasing fake watches but will also help in future after-sales services.

Strap options: Comfortable Yet Stylish

The SevenFriday Limited Edition S-Series is available in a black calfskin leather strap that has a soft touch padding and intricate black stitching. The leather strap provides good support for the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist, despite its large size.
