SpotlightLatest Oris Novelties Consolidate The Brand’s Strong Identity At Baselworld 2018

Paving their own path with strong individualistic timepieces, Oris has aced the current 'trend' of the season with its bronze watches over different collection. Find out more...

May We Recommend

Up until now, Oris has all been about ‘real watches for real people’, strongly advocating watches that have real functional applications, rather than those that are just to revel in the glory of high-level watchmaking complications. However, this doesn’t mean that the brand doesn’t innovate with their products. In fact, it’s something they take on as a challenge. “It is true to say that while making practical complications, it is a challenge to go technically further than we have,” agrees Ulrich Herzog, the chairman of Oris. “But our mechanical innovations are definitely those that are noteworthy and push the boundaries of watchmaking innovation.” Herzog also shared about how even when they do innovate and create impressive features, such as an altimeter or a depth gauge, it always makes perfect sense. So, despite the challenge, the Swiss watchmakers have managed to impress us year after year, maintaining their identity and individuality, as reflected by their new slogan, ‘Go your own way’.

The Perfect GMT Watch For India

Adding to their practical innovations, this year, Oris is continuing its series of completely in-house manufactured movements with the unveiling of their new Calibre 114. Since 2014, when they launched their prestigious range of in-house calibres, with the Calibre 110, the movements have been in their Artelier collection. “This year, our in-house calibres make their way into our Big Crown ProPilot collection with the Calibre 114,” informs Herzog. And it’s actually quite fitting for the Calibre 114 to be in the ProPilot, since its highlight is the new GMT feature, making it perfect for a traveller’s, and hence a pilot’s watch. What’s particularly impressive is that this watch takes into consideration the half-hour time differences across time zones, which most multiple time zone watches do not consider. “This watch is especially for those who are in India and Australia (or have concerns there), which have time zones with half-hour differences.” I reckon that this GMT watch will demand a closer look in India.

Big Crown Goes Small

The Big Crown collection also has other interesting new editions this year. There’s the Big Crown Pointer Date, which, as the name suggests has a hand that points to the markers of an analogue display of the date. And the surprise element for this watch is its 36mm edition – a size that’s incredibly small when you consider watches with such features. It’s a size that many who like vintage watches will prefer. And of course, even ladies will take a liking to a watch of this size, which looks more fitting for their wrists than the sizes that such watches usually come in.

Oris 2018: Big On Bronze

One feature of the Pointer Date that can’t go unnoticed is the beautiful bronze case. Making it an instant classic are the perfectly harmonised pistachio green dial and soft brown leather strap. But that’s not the only bronze we’ve seen from Oris this year. Of course, there’s the new Carl Brashear, which was the only series of Oris that came in bronze. It’s a gorgeous diver’s watch that caught our attention as one of the most impressive pre-Basel announcements. However, at Baselworld this year, we did spot more diver’s watches with bronze. The flagship Diver’s Sixty-Five is also now available in a smashing new edition with bronze elements such as the bezel. Bronze hues are also seen on the details of the dial of the new Diver’s Sixty-Five – the hour markers and such.

Oris Embraces Earthier Tones

Another signature line, the Oris Aquis Date has also adopted a more brown and bronze-adjacent palette – a refreshing new take on this line. The brand is also releasing this model in green – a colour that’s definitely emerging as a strong tone this year.

I believe that one of the distinct trend in 2018 edition at bazelworld has been dial size going smaller. Just love the new navitimer in 38 mm and bronze oris big crown.
