A consistent brand language, along with consistently perfect execution, is extremely important when it comes to making a name for yourself in the horological world. It’s all the more important when you’ve just joined the big leagues around five years ago and you’re competing with the big players. Norqain have excelled because of their consistency, and their latest watch—the Wild One Spengler Cup Limited Edition—personifies it.

Since 2019, the Swiss family-owned brand Norqain have been the official timekeepers of the hugely popular ice hockey contest, the Spengler Cup. To celebrate the contest’s 100th year and 95th edition, Norqain released the new Wild One as a limited edition of 95 pieces recently. Let’s unravel the beauty of this timepiece.

Practical, Efficient, Meaningful, Gorgeous: The ‘Wild One’ Spengler Cup Limited Edition

There’s a lot going on in the slender frame of this watch, but undoubtedly, the biggest attraction of the timepiece is the gorgeous, textured ice blue dial. Recently, we saw Norqain’s new Neverest Glacier GMT watch feature jagged dials, but this Wild One takes it up a notch.

Sure, ice blue was the obvious colour choice for a watch with an ice hockey connection to it, but what really acts as the cherry on top is the inspiration behind the texture: the trails left by players’ skates on the ice they play on. The design is aptly named ‘scratched ice’ by the brand.

The tournament’s logo at six o’clock drives home the point that the timepiece is inspired by the action, speed, and thrill of the game. The movement within the timepiece personifies the same. What powers the watch is the chronometer-certified 70-hour automatic calibre NN20/1 by Kenissi. The movement, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, features Norqain’s distinctive oscillating weight, while the caseback carries a ‘one of 95’ inscription. Completing the ensemble a well-integrated black rubber strap, ensuring comfort and durability.

The Wild One Spengler Cup builds on the sporty foundations laid by the collection and is a testament to the consistency we spoke of. Moreover, the brand is also the official timekeeper of the BMW Berlin Marathon and a strategic partner of the New York Road Runners, which makes their partnership with the National Hockey League Players’ Association all the more sensible.

Spengler X Norqain: What Birthed The Wild One Spengler Cup Limited Edition

The Wild One Spengler Cup Limited Edition is the perfect blend of the collection and the spirit of ice hockey, which in itself is so sacred to Switzerland, where the competition takes place every year. For a watch designed for the highly demanding circumstances of the sport, it needs to be durable, and if any brand could achieve that, it’d have to be Norqain.

A shock absorber lays in between the two Norteq layers, which makes it incredibly durable—it’s actually tested to 5,000g. The ultra-light proprietary material, a titanium cage, and the shock absorber—all make sure the watch is extremely light, with a weight of just 84g, roughly half the weight of a hockey puck. Oh, and also, it is 6.25 times lighter than steel and 3.5 times lighter than titanium.

Not only does this watch pay homage to the sport, it also cements the brand's position as what they’ve always aligned themselves as—advocates of living adventurously, freely, or as they state in their motto for people who choose Norqain: ‘My life, my way’

Adding to the durability is the water resistance of 200m, its anti-magnetic quality, and the anti-reflective scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass on the dial and caseback. With a diameter of 42mm, and a lug-to-lug distance of 49.40mm, the case’s screw-down crown comes over-moulded with black rubber and the brand’s emblem.
