The first major awards of the year, the Golden Globes—held usually at the beginning of January—are often a good indicator of which films and TV series will go on to win big at the other awards over the next few months. The Globes also kick-start a season of glamour and red carpet appearances by some of the most influential people. Emerging trends and styles are often scrutinised, for women and men alike, and so are the watches. While in recent years, men have moved beyond the traditional black-tie attire, introducing colour and patterns in edgier looks, the watches have also begun to complement these styles. Colour in timepieces have almost become commonplace, but at times, classic dress watches are necessary to balance out the more eccentric outfits, as one noticed at this year’s Golden Globe Awards as well. This was seen among the timepieces from several major watchmakers, but what stood out the most were vintage timepieces and highly elegant watches from IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Here’s a look at the most prominent pieces from these brands that were spotted on the red carpet of the Golden Globe Awards 2019, on Sunday, January 6.
John Krasinski | IWC Portugieser Chronograph
The actor and director of 2018 hit film, A Quiet Place was not only there because his movie was nominated, but also to support his wife, actress Emily Blunt, who was nominated for her role in the highly talked-about Mary Poppins Returns. Krasinski wore a tuxedo in deep blue—the couleur du jour in watches—and complemented the look with the IWC Portugieser Chronograph with a blue dial.
Darren Criss | IWC Portofino
A man who had already won an Emmy for his role in the miniseries, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Darren Criss even won the Golden Globe for his disturbing portrayal of Andrew Cunanan, the man who killed Versace. He chose to wear a floral number, but offset it with a classical dress watch—an IWC Portofino.
Sterling K Brown | IWC Pilot’s Watch
An actor, who has shot to popularity in recent years, owing to the phenomenal success of his series This Is Us, for which he’s even won a Golden Globe in the past, Sterling K Brown made a statement in velvet. He showed up with his wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, who also adorned a velvety look. To complement his attire, Brown chose a vintage-looking IWC Pilot’s Watch.
Nicholas Hoult | Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin
Nicholas Hoult—the actor of the nominated film The Favourite, which won Olivia Colman a Globe for lead actress in a comedy—kept things classic in a traditional black tuxedo with a black bowtie. The Mad Max: Fury Road and X-Men star took the classic look a step further with his sleek and sophisticated Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin.
Jason Bateman | IWC Portugieser
The Golden Globe-nominated star of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series, Ozark, attended the awards show with his wife, actress Amanda Anka. Another one to go classic in black, Bateman also chose a dress watch. This one was an IWC Portugieser Automatic.
Lili Reinhart | A Jaeger-LeCoultre 1945 Vintage
Lili Reinhart, the up and coming actress and star of hit series Riverdale—in which she plays Betty Cooper, the iconic Archie comics’ character—made an impression in a dreamy and fluid coral number, and chose a very beautiful vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre jewellery watch.
