‘Time alone—oh, time will tell’ crooned Robert Nesta Marley—better known to the world as Bob Marley—and touched souls all over the world. Little did he know how these words churned in 1978 will leave an indelible print in 2019, but we’ll come to that later. This Jamaican singer and songwriter is globally revered as one of the stalwarts of reggae and a revolutionary musician. He made the world sway to his smooth voice besides gaining popularity as a style god and the best-dressed rockstar of the ’70s. By turning around the face of the international music scene with the groove of Jamaican culture, Marley’s face is often spotted plastered on posters and T-shirts, making him an iconoclastic figure in popular culture.
His unparalleled influence knows no bounds and hence it is only logical that Raymond Weil, the avant-garde watch brand that has had a long-standing association with music, would honour the man by producing a limited edition timepiece in his name.
Designed in collaboration with the House of Marley, this 1,500-piece limited edition men’s watch is brimming with several telling references that reflect the anatomy of the music icon. Co-founded by Rohan (Bob Marley’s son), the House of Marley produces sustainably-made headphones, speakers and vinyl turntables. Let’s explore this special timepiece that is an absolute must-have for any Marley fan.
The Roaring Dial
Set inside the 42mm round stainless steel case, which is edged by an aluminium black and grey anodised bezel, the dial displays the Rastafarian attitude with the swagger only a Raymond Weil timepiece can exude. Decorated with the iconic lion that is often associated with Marley, the black dial is imbibed with a colour palette that has been inspired by the Ethiopian flag. The baton-shaped central hours and minutes, in steel, are filled with luminescent SuperLuminova, while the arrow-shaped central GMT hand is in green, the baton-shaped seconds hand in red and a circumference circle in yellow. A date window is neatly positioned at three o’clock.
The Rhythm Of The Movement
Endowed with a GMT function, this sapphire crystal-equipped timepiece is jamming to a high-performance quartz movement with the movement calibre standing at a height of 3mm.
The Caseback With A Song On Its Lips
Remember the song we mentioned right at the beginning? ‘Time will tell’, words from the 1978 song by Bob Marley and the Wailers from ‘Kaya’, have been subtly referenced on the numbered caseback along with his signature of this Swiss-made creation—a beautiful homage to the musician.
Brace An Attitude
While the well-sealed case helps ensure water resistance up to 300m, it comes fitted with a stainless steel bracelet, replete with a double-pusher security clasp. The Tango GMT Bob Marley Limited Edition’s lyrical quality, combined with a laidback attitude, reflects the legacy left behind by the legendary musician, making this Raymond Weil offering a true collector’s item.
