In order to do away with the radium-based paste, the watch making brand Panerai discovered a novel self-luminous element called Luminor. Furthermore, to secure this compound, which is based on Tritium (hydrogen isotope), the patent rights were reserved on 11 January 1949, under the trademark of “Luminor”. Therefore, this newly discovered substance became an inspiration for this elegant Radiomir Collection – Luminor.

The Luminor Marina Automatic Acciaio PAM00104 timepiece for men, is designed with polished stainless steel bezel surrounding a 44mm case diameter, which is also crafted with brushed stainless steel body, thus giving a uniform look to the timepiece. To further accentuate the looks of the dial, the stainless steel crown is protected by a lever, and is elegantly attached to the uppermost edge of the bezel. The stunning black bottom of the dial is nestled with the luminescent stick and hands hour markers. Arabic numeral hour markers occupy the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions. The dial, is also, finely etched out with a date display window located at the 3 o’clock position, and a small seconds’ sub-dial placed at the 9 o’clock position. Its stainless steel case back is meticulously etched out with a logo of “Officine Panerai”, thus giving credence to this much desired timepiece.

The Luminor Marina Automatic Acciaio PAM00104 timepiece for men, is embedded with Panerai OP III calibre, and as the name suggests, with the self-winding automatic movement. Housing such intricate and quintessential features as Glucydur balance, Incabloc anti-shock device, and 28,800 alterations per hour – the watch has become a prototype of a modern day timepiece. Powered with an impressive power reserve of 42 hours, the watch is also embedded with water-resistance mechanism to a depth of 300 metres. Therefore, this is a watch, which you can trust even when you are out for swimming. The scratch resistant Sapphire crystal glass case safeguards the dial from accidental damages and scratches. Also, its personalised alligator strap, along with a second interchangeable strap, and steel adjustable clasp, helps in giving both luxury and comfort to the wearers.

Night-time and underwater visibility of watch-dials were two challenges faced by the watches made in the 1940’s era. Officine Panerai took up the cause of crafting a watch  with these unsuitable problems taken care ofand in 1949, came out with a groundbreaking solution. The Florentine watch-maker and founder of the world renowned Officine Panerai brand was successful in identifying a luminescent substance which changed the course of watch-making for generations to come. Named after this invaluable substance, the Luminor collection set a new benchmark for visibility in hostile conditions.

All Luminor models come adorned with a brilliant solution to further enhance the robustness and reliability of an achiever’s watch, the lever device protecting the crown.  This helps in making the crown more water-tight as well as shielding it more effectively. In 1956 Officine Panerai patented the distinctive crown protection bridge that these time-pieces are renowned for. The strap attachments are crafted from the very same block of steel as the case. The Luminor Base models are crafted from a single block of AISI 316L stainless steel resulting in sleek, comfortable wear. Sapphire crystal obtained from corundum, the second hardest material in the world, is used to prepare the anti-reflective, scratch-proof glass, another significant Luminor characteristic. The Luminor Base 8 Days Acciaio is yet another well established time-piece that emerged equipped with the famous P.5000, an in-house movement with an 8-day power reserve.

On 8th December, history was made by Panerai models which managed to garner more than 1 million euros as proceeds at the ‘Panerai Only’ auction by the renowned Artcurial Auction house for Officine Panerai. Two vintage models, a Luminor and a Marina Militare were auctioned off at a whopping 120,000 euros,  significantly much higher than any initial auction estimates.

The PAM00104 is part of Officine Panerai’s historic legacy with respect to horology. The original Luminor was seen as the heir apparent and a bridge between the styles of the 1940s and 1950s. Earlier styles were more synonymous with the Italian Royal Navy, but as time passed the company sought to shift from their earlier identity and seek pastures anew. The result was the Luminor. This particular one, houses an in house OP III caliber in a 44mm polished steel case and a trademarked crown protecting device. The black dial is interspersed with luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers, along with a date slot at 3 o’clock, and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. The date slot further has a magnifying lens inserted between the dial and the sapphire crystal adhering to the principles of maximum visibility in low light conditions. It is also resistant up to 30 bar.
