Founded in the 1800's, IWC is a watch brand that is best known for its complicated yet elegant timepieces. An integrated manufacturer, it creates and assembles all parts of its watches in-house. The force behind anti-magnetic and anti-gravity movements, IWC has made a name as a brand that consistently makes technological advancements.
Inspired by AMG’s ceramic disk brakes, the Ingenieur Automatic AMG Black Series Ceramic is an elegant timepiece set in black. Some surfaces of the model are silky matte, some in piano lacquer-like finish while some have a high gloss finish. Taking cue from the AMG’s ceramic disk brakes, the watch that is made in zirconium oxide is an absolute eye-catcher.
The IWC IW322503 sports a round case made in black ceramic, measuring 46 mm in diameter and 14.5 mm in thickness. It has a black dial with a fixed bezel also made in black ceramic. Flaunting a skeleton case back, it has a screw-down crown with an analog black dial covered with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The strap is made in black rubber with stamped calfskin inlay. The dial has stick style hands and markers that are luminescent thus lending greater visibility and a rich sheen to the watch.
The timepiece is equipped with a mechanical automatic winding movement of IWC calibre 80110 engine. It is water-resistant to a depth of 120 meters, and is also equipped with an integrated shock absorbing system. The dial features an automatic date display located at the 3 o’clock position. This model has a power reserve of 44 hours when fully wound and the sapphire glass back reveals a high-performance mechanism. Complimented with 28 jewels, the IWC 322503 is a timepiece that aces in both the departments of - style and substance.
The IWC Ingenieur collection was born and perfected as an answer to cumbersome drawbacks from using too many technical appliances in wristwatches. These watches were designed to reduce ill-effects caused by magnetic fields encountered by engineers. Extensive modifications to stem this problem and a unique bidirectional automatic movement by Albert Pellaton paved the way for the Ingenieur collection’s launch in 1955. The ingenious winding system perfected by Pellaton winds movement when the rotor moves either way, infinitely more efficient than the common restrictive unidirectional movement. The most distinctive Ingenieur watch of that period however, was crafted by the watch-making maestro Gerald Genta, who infused brilliant engineering in the making of the Ingenieur SL or Jumbo Ingenieur as it is often called.
The Ingenieur novelty lies in capturing succinctly the essence of that which it emulates. IWC famously partnered with Mercedes AMG in year 2005 and brought forth two titanium cased models creatively emulating race-car styles. The 2013 Ingenieur watch collection showers more affection on the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 collaboration. The watch exudes performance efficiency, energy conservation and sporty appeal. Materials such as ceramic, titanium and carbon commonly used in Formula One have been incorporated in this collection to showcase their strong bond. An ideal example of this is the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic which has been styled primarily from material typically used in motor racing.
IWC Schaffhausen grandly celebrated its partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team by putting up an exclusive pop-up exhibition in The Watch Gallery at Selfridges Wonder Room, London in May 2013. The exhibition proudly displayed the suave new look of the remodelled 2013 Ingenieur collection. IWC also celebrated the unveiling of two brand new models in the year 2014 in Schaffhausen, the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic as well as Ingenieur Dual Time.
