About the Zenith Pilot Collection
Zenith's journey into the world of pilot's watches began in the early 20th century, during a period of rapid advancements in aviation. While Cartier's Santos-Dumont holds the distinction of being the first wristwatch specifically designed for aviators, Zenith quickly established themselves as key players in the field. Between 1916 and 1918, Zenith produced pocket watches for the Royal Air Force. By 1939, the brand introduced the Type 20, a watch that became synonymous with French Caudron aircraft and was widely used by various military forces, including those of the U.S., U.K., Germany, Poland, and Italy. In 2009, under the leadership of CEO Jean-Frédéric Dufour, Zenith revitalised their iconic line of pilot's watches, bringing new life to a celebrated legacy.
Bold And Functional Design
Zenith's Pilot watches are renowned for their bold and functional design, highlighting their origins as essential aviation tools. Early models featured large cases, oversized crowns, and highly legible dials with prominent numerals. This design ethos continued with the 2012 Pilot Montre d'Aéronef Type 20, which boasted a massive 57.5mm titanium case reminiscent of early pilot watches' onboard instruments. Recent iterations have modernised this classic design with streamlined, wearable cases and trendy stainless steel and black ceramic materials. The redesigned cases include flat bezels and refined crowns, enhancing aesthetics and functionality while retaining the core elements that define Zenith's pilot watch heritage.
Recent models offer contemporary strap options, including khaki or black rubber with a Cordura effect and brown leather. These watches maintain the essential functionality of historical pilot's timepieces, with added features and modern design elements to appeal to traditional enthusiasts and new generations of watch lovers.
Cutting-Edge Performance
Zenith's Pilot watches combine historical significance with modern advancements. The line honours the high-precision calibre 5011K of the original, known for its record-setting accuracy. Many of the new Pilot watches are powered by the El Primero 3652, which offers excellence with its patented large date mechanism and 5Hz frequency. The Pilot Big Date Flyback, powered by the El Primero 3652, exemplifies Zenith's commitment to innovation, integrating a flyback chronograph for enhanced performance.
