About the Tutima Glashütte Grand Flieger Collection
History
The tradition of crafting seamless pieces of machinery have been prevalent in Germany for decades. During the Second World War, Tutima was preparing heavy-duty chronographs for the Luftwaffe, the combat aviation wing of Germany. The first chronograph to hit the civilian market was during the 1940s. Taking its inspiration from the same chronograph, the present-day Tutima Glashütte Grand Flieger collection is a more robust reinterpretation of the B-Uhr watches prevalent during the great war.
Features
The Grand Flieger collection is equipped with three series, the Grand Flieger Airport, Grand Flieger Classic, and Flieger Automatic. Featuring a simplistic virtue, the Flieger Automatic features a simple and clean dial with lance hands guarding the timekeeping duties. The legibility of the series takes a higher ground with a triangular marker at 12 o'clock and a date window at the 6 o'clock marker. Whereas, the Flieger Aero Club is a much-refined variant of the Flieger Automatic from which the Roman numerals and the triangular marker are absent. Coming to a much closer variant of the 1940s chronograph, the Grand Flieger Classic is both a simple timekeeper and a complex chronograph. The classic features a red mark on the 12 o'clock marker directly taken from the first chronograph created by Tutima. Whereas, the cathedral hands are the dominating factor on the dial apart from the large hour markers. The chronograph iteration features horizontally stacked sub-dials and small seconds sub-dial at 9 with a date window at 3.
The Modern Flieger
Known for keeping tradition and heritage alive, Tutima decided to fill in modern design cues inside the Grand Flieger Airport series. Features such as sword hands with smooth bi-directional rotating bezel with ceramic inserts are the modern touches provided to the Grand Flieger. The Grand Flieger Airport Automatic features a day/date window at the 3 o'clock marker. Whereas, the Grand Flieger Airport Chronograph features a similar setup of chronograph counters as the Flieger Classic Chronograph. Apart from the robust timekeeping abilities, the Grand Flieger collection also provides a water-resistance capability of 200 metres.
