About the Seiko Astron Collection

History

Seiko has been in the business of innovative watchmaking since 1881. With years of experience under its belt, Seiko has managed to build watches that are both futuristic and retain the traditionality of watchmaking. It was on Christmas Eve of 1969 that Seiko decided to reshape the watchmaking world by releasing the world’s first quartz watch, the Seiko Quartz Astron. Since the launch of the first quartz watch, the Seiko Astron collection has developed itself into a much more robust and innovative collection.

Features

Timekeeping is an art that is best tasted when accurate. This goes well with the Seiko Astron, a timepiece that is fitted with a GPS module. The GPS module inside these watches provides the timepieces under the collection with accurate time and can adjust itself according to the location of the wearer with just a push of a button. Apart from the GPS module, the timepieces are powered by solar power. Also dubbed as the world’s first GPS Solar watch, the Seiko Astron is a very different approach towards being a world timer. The Astron is also fitted with three sub-dials featuring either chronographs or various functions such as day/date, power reserve, and second-time zone.

Limited Editions

In the world of unique timepieces, Seiko is in a habit of launching limited edition timepieces. Inside the Astron collection, there are timepieces that celebrate the legacy of both the brand and the watch. Such as the Seiko Astron Kintaro Hattori 160th Limited Edition watch is a brilliant tribute to the founder of the company. Another timepiece celebrating the launch of the first Astron is the Seiko Quartz Astron 50th Limited Edition.

    "The skies on your wrist"

I have always dreamt of owning this watch; having seen it in Ethos and other watch stores and researched about it in great detail. Last day, I walked into the Seiko store just to handle this living wonder. The best part about any Astron is that it's a self-adjusting watch - you move from one country to another, this watch will automatically set the time depending on the GPS co-ordinates. And I would like to say that this will suit frequent flyers best.

The watch is quite heavy (not too heavy, but heavy enough), and a mere glance is enough for any watch buff to make out an Astron from any distance. It has an extremely complex automatic movement (but I am told that the Astron models don't come with a skeleton model, would have been awesome to have one - the naked sky gazer). It is an extremely solid watch and is adorned with a lot of other features too (no wonder Djokovic always wears one!). If you have the means, don't think twice, this is the best timepiece that you can buy at 3L INR if you ain't going for a Watch (when I say Watch, I mean Patek Philippe)!
