About the Panerai Radiomir Collection
History
Panerai Radiomir collection is widely touted to have the richest history and is the signature collection of Panerai. Made in a collaboration with the Italian Royal Navy’s Lieutenant Commander Carlo Ronconi, the Panerai Radiomir was documented in a patent filed in 1916. It wasn’t until 1936 that the first Radiomir was born.
Design & Features
The styling of the case carries an authentic vintage aura with its curved and rounded appearance. Unlike the Luminor models that sport a patented crown protecting device, the Panerai Radiomir watches contain wire lugs, a unique design that connects the straps to the case. With hand-wound mechanical or automatic mechanical movements topped with an anti-reflective, scratch-proof Sapphire Crystal, the Panerai Radiomir collection is available in various dial sizes ranging from 42mm to 48mm. In a few timepieces under the collection, the small second's feature is studded at the 9 o’clock marker.
Events
An unimaginable 1 million euros were made as proceeds and two world records broken by individual vintage Panerai models on 8th December 2014 in the ‘Panerai only’ auction organized by the well-known Artcurial auction house for Officine Panerai. The Panerai models that broke all records were the extremely rare ‘Radiomir Egiziano’, a diver’s watch made in the year 1956 for the Egyptian Navy and a Special Edition Radiomir PAM00021, crafted in platinum in 1997 with a case design similar to the Panerai models made for the Royal Italian Navy in 1938.

Radiomir was the term Panerai gave the luminous material it had developed. The patented technology enabled the face to be read in extremely poor light conditions and hence the name. Panerai had a long standing relationship with the Italian Royal Navy which relied on them for durable and accurate time pieces, equipment ready to face stern environmental tests. In the 1940s, Panerai furthered the Radiomir legend by upgrading certain aspects such as the addition of lugs shaped from the case itself to secure the strap instead of the previous steel wire welded to the case. The PAM00513 honors the original Radiomir 1940 and its design is based as such. Its in-house P.999/calibre is housed in a 42mm 18 ct. red gold case with a large matching cylindrical winding crown. The brown dial which complements the gold hues is completed by luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers along with a small seconds dial at 9 o'clock.
